Seeing that this forum is fairly quiet at the moment I thought I should send out a hello from the crew on Emilia which at the moment consists of myself, the ship's dog Stampe - and the great Hanse 311 sailor Gregor from The Netherlands, the posts of whom we have all enjoyed. (When will you become Admiral, Gregor?)

We are currently cruising the lake Mälaren and the weather is cold and rainy, but who cares when you've got good company and a working heater?

Marcel, I am hoping to be cruising Dutch waters one day. It would be nice if you could come to Sweden too.

I enjoy meeting myHanse people in real life. All the people I have met so far have been very nice. (You know who you are..) Gregor is no exception. Great guy, great sailor.

This is what myHanse is all about , not just building a knowledge base amongst the Hanse sailors and making friendships via the forum but cementing these friendships by actually making the effort to meet up with, and sail with them often in new areas.

Just a quick comment on Gregor's photograph -
Johan has obviously been working very hard taking his photographs as he has now gone to sleep or he is recovering from a late night of drinking with Gregor.LOL

Johan, Gregor,

Sorry for going a bit off-topic but I'm always willing to learn.
On the second photo you guys have got your traveller midships.
Normally when I'm on a heading like yours in the picture, I would place the traveller in a leeward position.
Can you explain me why you didn't do that ???
Thanks for your answer.

Posted By: Johan Hackman
Date Posted: 21 October 2009 at 17:09
I rarely see a point in changing the position of the traveller when sailing downwind. It only prolongs the sheet, it doesn't pull the boom down at all.

The philosophy is to "sheet" the main with the boom vang. It has the downward-pulling effect the mainsheet lacks in this situation.

I hope this answers your question, although Gregor would probably answer differently.

I think the below picture shows the relationship between the vang and the mainsheet pretty well. The vang has the ability to pull the boom downwards and thus take the exaggerated twist out of the sail.

Now, Mr Holby is one who stands for what he says. He took the next flight to Stockholm to have a beer in the cabin of Emilia while the wind was howling in the rig and a light rain was falling. He managed to combine his trip to Sweden with a business meeting, he said.

If the rest of the people at this forum are as nice as the people I have already met in real life you are welcome too, all of you. I just have to buy some more beer since Holby had the last one.

I think San Francisco will need a little bit more planning as Ryanair i dont think goes there yet!!!
BUT hopefully you will have more beer than our leader, when people call.
Joking apart, it was a great evening and worth the travel to meet the whole crew of Emilia.

PS Mind you tho' prehaps one day I may manage it

Just out of interest, what does the "A" stand for and does the name "iliohale" mean anything?

I won't be on that part of this beautiful planet for a while so I will have to raincheck the invitation.

The "A" tour can be found here:

http://www.latitude38.com/features/daysail.html - http://www.latitude38.com/features/daysail.html

Note, it includes a trip under the Goldengate Bridge, a run down the city front, a screaming reach back across the bay in 25+kts of wind, and then a mellow short tack up past Angel Island and Tiburon.

Another nice encounter in Stockholm again. This time I met up with Marco and Tia in their 370. If you look at the picture in the first post of this thread you will realise that we tied up at the very same jetty, which is one of my favourite spots when I am out weekend sailing.

We had a great time together and got the chance to discuss various aspects of sailing life.

PS. For one of us it was the last sail of the season before the boat was taken out of the water. The other one is looking forward to more sailing before the winter blues sets in. I am not telling who is who.

I also managed to take a picture of S/Y Älva when we were tacking in the Essingesundet. I don't think Marco could take any pictures of Emilia. Maybe we were to fast or he forgot to charge his camera batteries?

@Idelfix. The names of the islands sound much better in english for sure. Pitty that the climat is not as warm as at the othe Virgin Islands.

@Johan. Nice pictures as usuall. It was  a nice sail indeed. And... I did not forget to charge my batteries, I simply forgot them at home Angry.

As the jib is on the wrong side of the boat you cant see the action camera that is fitted on the mast. I do have some pictures of s/y Emilia... very far away as we did not stand a chance to keep Emilias pace in the poor winds.

Its nice to see how our bow rises above the water. As you can see in the picture I dont have the 15 kg bownachor and 30 m of chain, plus almost empty watertank. Makes a huge difference obviously.

Marco, looks like you have a very fast boat on the pictureWink.
Where is the first picture taken?

Sad that we don´t have that archipelago on the westcoast.
As they say, Stockholm is the scandinavian Venice.

It's called Jungfruholmarna, two small islands between Ekerö and Fittja. It is in the lake Mälaren to the west of Stockholm.
