Subject: Hanse 545 options list

Hi everybody,

I'm planning to buy a Hanse in 2010. I have a family of five and I think that the 470e or the new 545e are the ideal models for us. When looking at the list of options for this models, I have a lot of questions about what I should buy and what I dont need (I'm a rookie!!!). So I'm asking for some advice from experienced sailors like you guys, about the cruising pack that costs 24.350 € + VAT for the 545e. Do you think a rookie should buy this pack or should I buy separatelly just some of the options of this pack? For example: do you think that the Bow thruster SWINGTHRUSTER RMC, retractable is a must?

The Cruising pack have this components:

 - Bow thruster SWINGTHRUSTER RMC, retractable
 - 2 x 54 AEST winch with electrical drive (instead of standard winch)
 - MDS Car slide system for mainsail
 - Genoa track on deck with pin stops
 - Hydraulic backstay tensioner
 - Battery pack: 2 additional batteries 150Ah AGM each
 - Teak on Cockpit floor
 - 3-blade folding propeller
 - Blind-Set
 - FM Radio CD with speakers in saloon and cockpit
 - Anchor "Delta" 25 kg, 60 m chain 10 mm, 4 mooring lines, 6 fenders
 - Maindrop system with Lazy Jacks, colour: light grey
 - 3 mast steps
 - 6 fenders, 4 mooring lines, flag pole

Best regards

Joćo Miguel

Hi Joao

Good call and looks like an improvement on the 531/540 models. I would get everything on the cruising pack list although it may be worth while costing out those items with your dealer as a separate exercise. But a few comments:
1. The anchor is under spec in my view. I would go for at least the 30kg model.
2. The length of chain needs to be 100 metres. These boats have high topsides and tend to "sail" at anchor. IMHO 60 metres is at the bottom end.
3. Check to see that the Selden MDS system splits the cars as the sail is dropped i.e. onto alternate tracks on each side  - this drops the height of the folded sail on the boom.
4. Get 4 mast steps - two at the top, Trying to swing around on 1 step is too hard for any length of time.
5. Bowthruster an essential.
6. Music system may be underspec. Depends on what you want to achieve and if you want to install a screen below etc.

Cheers and best of luck
Keith

 Hi Joćo,

I would prefer to make my own package deal to have the best quality stuff on the market

When Hanse delivered my 531 #35 they already showed a tendency to select brands based on costs and then use types that I would select one grade more strong for serious sailing. Looking at the models that followed they continued in that direction, as only in that way they could decrease the selling price of this type (next to making things optional that used to be standard).

Just some remarks on the option list you mentioned

- I have not opted for the bow thruster, and after 4 years still wouldn't opt for one (took some time to get used to the boat size, when having sailed a First 41S5 before, but even getting in or out a marina box with a 90-degree wind is not a problem for a duo handed crew).

- 2 electrical winches is really nice (think of upgrading my port Harken winch, very easy to do since all wiring and switches are pre-installed anyway)

- Looked at the MDS slide car system of Selden, and would advise you seriously to consider a more appropriate system with an external rail connected to the mast groove and cars with Torlon roller bearings. Personally I consider Harken to be the best, and since it is a main component on your yacht it is worth to go for the best (having split tracks as Keith advised I considered as a nice to have, I did not opt for it because I do not feel like to add complexity (jamming risk) and wanted to spend the money on other nice stuff).

- Genua tracks; yes

- Hydraulic tensioner; of course

- battery pack; yes, probably the ones they toke out of the standard delivery anyway Smile.

- teak on cockpit floor; looks much better and adds to safety

- 3 blade folding prop; yes, it is a sailing boat. I'm happy with my Yanmar with mechanical drive and 3 blade Gori, but also read the nice mailing under the subject "gori propeller" and "shaft/rudder vibration" where you will be overloaded with opinions.

- blind set; look at what is on the market, before going for the Hanse choice

- music installation with in/outside speakers; yes, but I would opt to make my own choice on both radio set and speakers (often rather personal what you like)

- Anchor etc; fully agree with Keith, the 25 kg is too light, and on top of that the Delta brand those not give the best results. Installed a Rocna 40 kg on my 531 just 2 month ago, and now use my 25 kg Plastimo Kobra-2 as spare. There is some mailing on this subject under "anchor fitting for 531" where I learned that on a 540 this anchor does not fit due the somewhat different canting construction, but a Rocna 33 does. Rocna has a nice website with also a good knowledge base part for general advise.

Also I changed over to the stainless steel chain of WASI having the best specification on WL/BL, stays cleaner and this does not buildup under the anchor winch (costs more as the conventional stuff).

Have 60 meters chain plus 60 meters of 8mm  polyester 8-multibraid line, and to prevent the sailing behind anchor I use a riding sail.

- Lazy jacks yes, main drop system don't know.  I have a main drop system and it makes it easy to cover up the sail from the UV after sailing, but during sailing I prefer to have a full look at the sail without those clothes flapping around. Just use what I have now.

- Agree with the 4 mast steps, and Keith reminds me that I really should get this one of my wish list.  Will also install 2 folding steps at the top of the mast, makes working up there easier, and you can enjoy the view you have up there more relaxed.

Success with making your selection, and kind regards

Harry

Hi Joao,
I would agree with most of what Keith and Harry recommend.
We did an aftermarket installation of a traditional tunnel thruster.
My view would be that it is better to have one and not need it than the alternative! I did not fully trust the retractable design so we opted for the tunnel.(Maxpower 180kgf)
You should get the biggest anchor that will fit into the locker(30/35kg)
It is a great help when shorthanded to have both primaries powered.
My advice would be to work with your dealer to get the options you want
regardless of what is offered on the standard list.
Hanse UK have a team of suppliers that they use on a regular basis when putting boats together and this allows a bit more choice and flexibility that most.
Good luck!

Aaron

Hi Joao

A couple of comments.

I am not familiar with the Selden  MDS system (although Selden gear is usually quite good in my view) but I have the Harken battcar system as does Harry. That works well and only have a single drop i.e. it doesn;t split onto two lower tracks.

On the bow thruster question I was interested in Harry's comments. If we were based in one marina (as we would if we were in Auckland) and then sailing up/down the coast we would be anchoring in  bays at night and thus rarely using a bow thruster. But we are in a different port many nights in the Med and get into all sorts of small spaces with and without cross winds - in those situations I am definitely in favour of a bow thruster - it just makes life easier and minimises risk. We have a 24v Maxpower retractable system and have never had any problems with it The cover fell off in the first years but that was because it had been glued on rather than screwed and Hanse provided a replacement which we fitted. If you do fit a bowthruster make sure it has plenty of power - we see many German built boats (starts with B) and the bow thrusters seem very ineffectual.

We have also changed our anchor to a Rocna 33 kg model that just fits into the locker when the arm is retracted. Works well and better than the  Delta.

We have a 3 blade folding max prop on a 100hp Yanmar. Harry refers to the discussion elsewhere on this site about vibration and we do not have that problem with this prop - seems like it is more associated with the Gori but also Hanse may have addressed this issue with the 545.

Cheers
Keith

Hi keith,

Thankyou again! About the bow thruster, I agree with you that in some cases is will be very useful. The 545 is a big boat and we never know where we will anchor in the future.

Hi Joao Miguel

I just ordered my boat a 470e 2010, you will find that you cant change options offered by Hanse. I wanted a maxprop and they wont go for it. That makes reverse manuvers using more rep then needed with a feather prop. At any point make sure of the alternatives you will be choosing. No negative comments from my contacts on Hanse bowthruster. I tried a 430 with the main on bearings worked wonderfull. An anchor for standard 1 pound per foot. The type? I'll just say, have a look at this study. Its the latest, the most accurate, with the latest models on the market.

As for chain, maybe on the new Hanse the chain dosn't pile up, there has been an issue on that and maybe they solved it. High tense chain is very power full and much cheaper. If you have the budget for a 545 instead of a 470 go for it, that way you wont have to figger out where to put the dinghy... [IMG]smileys/smiley18.gif" align="middle" /> For battery's the option gets you going at first but surely with all that's on the boat you should eventualy consider having 1000 amp reserve. Kids love watching films, playstation, freezer, auto pilot radar, non led lghting .....

Great choice of boat, style in hand for the next 10 years or more and good performance.

Hi Jean,

Thank you for your post Smile I am considering the 470 too, because it is much cheaper and it's a beautifull boat too and also very confortable for a family of 5. I eard some rumors about a new 475 in 2010, maybe with the new 545 design. Do have any information from Hanse about that?

Cheers

Dear Miguel

We do have a 470 built in 2007 and so did our neighbour who exchanged it now to a 540, but he is not more happy. The same three cabin layout, a bit more space at the nav place and in the lazarette; exept if you have a dinghy that takes away all space. Concerning sailing I'm just about sure that the 470 is faster and more responsive on the rudder. You tack this boat like a dinghy. (I used to sail a Fireball dinghy of 80 kilos). Imagine you have about 6 tons more to move but not 30% more sail area.

A 475 is coming for sure but I guess it will be more of a cosmetic upgrade unless Hanse asks us owners what should be changed. (I may start a new topic in the 470 corner. )But I wonder since long when they close the gap between 47 and 54 with a 50 footer. 15 metres is always a barrier you should keep an eye on.

Choosing the dealer you can trust is the crucial decision I tell you! He will have to do all the warranty issues as Hanse doesn't like to be contacted directly. And believe me, if he's nuts (like mine) you will have a nerve wrecking time.

Hello guys

I am in the same process of choosing how to outfit a 545. One issue is to install a generator and AC. About the generator I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the fisher panda generator, and if it is better to install a generator after sale.

About the AC, my question is if it is better to retrofit this after sale?

Cheers

I have and it's good.
already with 600h and only problems with impeller wich i change myself having always two as spare.
In a warm place like Portugal install AC and generator and if possible webasto on factory.
you will use all once in winter, if you use the boat a lot as i do, the webasto is silent during night.
good luck

I have the 10Kw FischerPanda and I am happy with it.
You have to be very careful, to close the sea cock during repeated start trials (for example if you run out of fuel), else sea water enters the cylinders through the exhaust and ruins the engine. Besides that "problem" the genset is very reliable and will serve you many years. We run the FP double the hours than the engine (about 300 h per year).

I would never think to postfit the generator or AC. It is very complicated and will never reach the quality of a factory installation.
Do not forget to install an inverter. We run the inverter continuously. It is a great thing to have 220V in the boat.

Hello
I have build in the Fischer Panda 6000 i PMS in and change the org Victron
Multiplus 1600/70 Amp to a  Quattro 3000/120 AMP/12V and the digital  multiplus control panel  .This combination works very well. The Quattro inverter can steer 2 X 230 AC sources inlets(it takes normaly first the gen inlet if it is not running he will take wall source if this is not available it take the batterys source by the inverter) and 2X DC 12V outlets, one only when there is wal- our generator 230 AC source, if this is not enough power he will use the batterys for a short period for more power to start the airco ,if there is no 230 input it shut off the big loads like waterheater, airco etc. and make by the inverter 230 AC for the lower power like the 230 outputs in the galley and cabines. There is also a contactor to automatic start the generator if the batterys are charged not enough.Al together this system can deliver almost 60 AMP 230V AC for a short period.(29 Amps by gen and a other 30 by the inverter from the battery's) With this system you have a complete power control.
I have installed there by myself but it is indead a lot of work.Especially the frame to build the gen in above the engine.I have make this in allu.
Also you have to change a lot of the wirings.the org. cables to the inverter are even for the 1600 inverter a little bit to weak,so you have to change this(2X 90MM² pos and 2X 900MM² Neg) also the fuses(2X200 amps) and put a extra earth leak protection of 32 Amps on the second 230 circuit.
Because I get a very good price from the Victron-FischerPanda Belguim dealer and dit al the work by myself I get a better and cheaper solution than when I order it org by Hanse.Smile
If you can not do it by ourself, I think it will by cheaper to take this option by the org order by Hanse.
