Hi there,

hope someone out there can help me out with some wisdom:
I am about to place an order for a 545; as the boat will be operated around Phuket where there is a lot of shallow water, I was thinking of ordering the shallow draft keel. Does anyone have an insight into how this would affect the handling and the performance of the boat, maybe based on experience from an older comparable model?

Also, I am agonising about ordering the rubbing strake for extra hull protection, and I was thinking about the helmsman seats. These things are damn expensive for what I imagine they represent in material value. Are these things worth the money or are there more realisticly priced alternatives?

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Phuketsailor,

I have the 370 with a shallow draft Keel. Since a lot of the area I sail in has shallow water, I would not have it any other way. I have been on boats with a deeper draft but can not tell much difference. I think you would need to compare in exactly the same conditions to really note differences and this is difficult on East Coast of US.

Regarding the rubbing strake, I got this and glad I did. My first year I did a lot of pillon scraping. The strake really helped. Even now days I occational scrap a pillon. I can not imagine scraping a new hull against one of these. If your brave, you can puchase the material yourself and install. It's easy but requires drilling into the hull, something I perfer a professional to do.

Yes, things are always expensive but the alternative could be more. Good luck in your purchase. Wish I could sail in Phuket. I've motored on the Eastern shore of KoSaumi and love that area.

Hello Phuketsailor,

I am brandnew on this forum.
We have orded a new 545e at the end of february, and she will be delivered end april or beginning may.
Our sailing aerea will be the Turkisch an Greek waters and we have take the medium draft keel.In this aerea, I think it will be the best solution.
As working for a few year for a Hanse dealer, I have sail with the 540 medium- and deep draft and have feel not a big diverence.
Standard is the deep draft T keel in Iron and the extra cost for the medium has resen from 3.800 EURO to 12.900 EURO but now this is a steel-led keel.
About the helmman seat, forget it, I am sure you will find a much better and less expensive solution in Thailand, and by the way I tink on the 545 you don't need then anymore.
I diden't order the rubbing strike,I am sure it is a better protection, but I don't like it.It ruined the design of the hull in mine option.

I hope this is useful for you.Wink

Thanks Mike and Wild for your comments on my questions.

I have meanwhile ordered the 545 with the standard keel and just will have to be careful in some areas around Phuket. The surcharge for the shallower versions was just too much.

I did not order the rubbing strake but went for the helmsman seats (which may have been a mistake). As the yacht will be chartered out I thought it is a nice comfort item people might want to have.

The boat will be delivered end April.

Michael - Chartering is something we're considering

How is your 545 standing up to charter wear and tear ?

Hi Black,

sorry the very late reoly - hope you still read this...

The boat is being chartered out since November last year, combined charter days since then have been app 60 days, plus app. 20 days of private use.

We only charter her out with skipper, so we have a bit more control over wear and tear.

There have been no major hickups. One of the wall lamps in the fwd cabin fell off and was difficult to re-install as the wall is very thin, the water maker has been falling out a few times but could be revived.

Problem was the capacity of the 2 fresh water tanks; the maunal says they have the same size but it seems that the second one in emptying much faster - I guess it is much smaller.... Since there is no indication about the quantity when checking the gauges - only the water level in the tank is displayed - we had a few surprises when suddenly the second tank went from half to empty within a few hours.

Structurally the boat is strong and there is nothing which is worn or weak by now.

She is fun to sail and to live on. I would go for the same boat again.
