Hi, Last Monday completely unexpected our 2 year old FP 10Kw generator stopped working. After retrying once or twice to restart it without success, we opened the plastic soundproof covers and to our dismay we discovered that the genset tray was full of salt. Also the main engine lying under the genset was also sprayed with salt. Since we had checked the engine oil two days ago it was obvious that the problem happened during the last two days. I spend two days checking the internet for possible causes I got very warried and was almost ready to say goodbye to the generator for ever. Today the FP technician came and luckily he just found that the sea pump seal had failed flooding the pump case with sea water. No other damage was done. What we learned: It is VERY important to check and REGURARLY replace both the sea water pump seal and the exhaust gas plastic tube. If one of these fails the genset floods with seawater with sometimes catastrophic consequences. In our case we escaped with a sseal and a electric contactor controling the fuel pump. It is also very important if the generator doesnt start with one or two times to close the sea cock before retrying. Else there is a big risk that the seawater enters the cylinders (thru the exhaust valves) distroying the diesel engine.
