Ken,  I use Maguiars products - they have an oxidization remover, a colour restorer and a pure wax. For the light blue I didn't notice much difference with the colour restorer and would not waste my time again. For all applications I used a professional style electric polisher with appropriate application pads and buffers - this makes a huge difference!

The bottom in the pics was fairly clean but it was done about 10 month prior. I use Petit Premium and have a diver wipe it down every 3-4 weeks (usually before a race). During the warmer summer months there will be some growth if I don't do this but in the colder winter months it stays pretty clean.

Marcel, a crew of 8 works well to do quick, clean transitions around the marks. However, we can get away with 6-7 and for overnight races we'll have 9-10 so people can rest....

Archerdos - I see you have converted to a conventional spinnaker with pole.  Can you describe what was required to do so?

Thanks

Evenstar
For a conventional spin pole you need
- vertical track on the forward part of the mast. Have a look at this for some ideas. http://www.harken.com/hardware/adjustablespinnakerpolecars.php - http://www.harken.com/hardware/adjustablespinnakerpolecars.php  Alternatively, you can just have a car with a spring loaded pin but it is much more difficult to move under load
- you need a pole topping lift, I use the self tacking jib sheet
- you need a downhaul, very simple to rig an extra line for this down one of the side decks with a block on the foredeck just in front of the cabin top

Evenstar,

Rubato, thanks for the reply.
I have also added a double rope system, so it is easier to jibe with the spinnaker.

Regards,  Javier

Javier, By double rope system do you mean a sheet and guy on each side? I guess I forgot to mention those were also needed as I was focused on the pole only for some reason :)  Steve

For the second Spinnakersheet (Aft Guy) I simply use the spring cleats as fairleads. Smooth and strong. Works perfectly and I need no extra block or fitting for these very high loads!

Steve,

You are right, I meant:  a sheet, a guy, a lead block and also an additional winche on each side.

Steve,
I am wondering whether to hoist the spinnaker from the top of the mast.
What do you think? Will it be strong enough?

Javier
Good question, I've contemplated this myself to possibly boost downwind performance. The short answer is I'm told that this will work, strength is not a problem.

Currently Rubato is configured with the spinnaker halyard(s) at the top of the forestay. This was done with purpose. Our boats have a tall rig and high aspect ratio spinnakers are less stable. So instead of going masthead on the spinnaker, I went from the top of the forestay and actually broadened the base with an oversized pole. So far this has worked well. A good experienced sailmaker should be able to help you with these types of decisions and trade offs.

Hope that helps
Steve

Steve,

Thank you for your response.
I find the H400 quite stable sailing under spinnaker.  Rising the hoist, will make the  boat faster, as the sail can be made 10 square meters bigger, altough I  wil have to pay a penalty of about 3,5 seconds per mile on my rating certificate.

Javier, I guess I'm suggesting that instead of adding the extra sail area up high, there is also the option of adding it lower by using an oversized spin pole. Penalty will be about the same with either approach.

Thanks for the replies on the conversion to conventional pole - sounds pretty straightforward!  Steve, you mention that you have an oversized pole - can you provide the dimensions?

Thanks!

My doctor tells me that I should go to Ischia to cure my frequent colds. I don't know if it is the daycare germs or the ordinary winter blues that causes them but nonetheless it looks like it is a place worth paying a visit.

Jof / Grey Goose

A couple of questions are you flying your kite from the bow or do you have the bowsprit? and where do you run the downhaul to after it comes inboard?
Thanks
Colin

Hi, Colin,
I use the little removable prodder / bowsprit that fits into the stemhead fitting. Not sure if it is still a feature of the later 400s but it works fine.
If by the "downhaul" you mean what I call the tack line, I lead this back along the deck via a block that you can just see on the starboard toerail in front of the mast and then to the genoa sheet deck-mounted turning block. I used to lead it to the starboard cockpit winch but now have extra Harken 46 winches on both sides of the cockpit (using the moulded plinths)and so lead the tack there, using the cockpit winch for the spinnaker halyard.
Hope that makes sense!

Yes, Johan, it's a wonderful place, provided that you are not there in August or during the weekend from May to September. In that case, you'll find more (motor)boats than water.

Ralf, Vesuvio is the least dangerous thing in Napoli. Unfortunately, riding a motorcycle (more holes than pavement!) or wearing any watch worth more than 10 euro (more thieves than holes in the pavement!) is way more dangerous... Cry

It was indeed, Terry - GG had been at Hamble Point for a couple of weeks while Peter and his team did a few jobs.
Pleased to say that the sea-cocks all passed careful inspection without problem!
