Is there any reason why I can't put a simple switch from the engine blower to turn it off? The noise drives me mad and I have heard that it is only there so that the boat complies with EU regulations or something similar.
I can see no real danger or disadvantage in doing this.

Yanmar is recommending certain temperatures for the engine room. This is also related to efficiency and long time wear. It is simple to say that cooler is always better.
The engine would also work in a hotter enviroment but less good.
Why should you switch that off? Doesn't make sense to me.

Which engine blower is build into your boat?
Some time Hanse used a very noisy but cheap fan from attwood for this. I changed it to one from
plastimo. It is totally diffrent now! The sound of the old fan was much
louder than the engine itself. The new one is not audible when the motor
is running!

For the maiden trip I was really nerved about he noise, I bought a switch to turn the fan off for manouvers in harbour. For longer motor trips I switched it on and i measured that temperatur is going down. After te maiden trip I had few complains, one was the fan. Hanse changed it to a more quiet one and now I'm happy with the sound.

When you run a 2 liter engine at 2500 rpm, you get a turnover of 5,000 liters of air per minute and it should be more than enough ventilation in the engine compartment

I cannot see or hear an engine fan on my 320. I have vents in the companionway which supply air down to the engine.

Our blower is very quiet, we hardly hear it but it does work, I occasionally hear it coming from a vent in the stern, I think the cheaper ones are the noisy ones!

Oh Gordon. If only you had mentioned swapping earlier. We could have done it when I was in Cawsand, which I think is quite close to you. Your large headsails would have been useful for my passage onwards.

Gordon
i'll have a look this weekend, can you tell me the size and make of your larger headsail, weve been out a couple times this week with low winds, and the self tacker is useful but not good enough in a f3, we have the extra tracks fitted but have never used them, did you use the same installation as shaukaas? cheers Gordon

Thanks trist. we got a North sail 4.1 m from clew to luff. Yes I copied shaukass couldnt think of another way other than a block off the stern cleat. maybe code 0 is an easier option as suggested by Nick

We faced the opposite problem : How to run the blowers after the engine was shut down. This is important for us also when we run the generator. We noticed that running the fans for about an hour after stopping the engine reduces the rear cabin temperature and smell considerably. Initially we used a spare switch to feed the blower together with the existing engine circuit but the engine buzzer was activated, so we used a relay to deactivate the engine circuit when the blowers are directly fed by the manual switch.

The Atwood fan stopped working this summer so replaced it with another Atwood, same model but revised with different blades. Definitely quieter. Also, I changed the fitting method. No longer screwed to the bulkhead but "floating". this also reduced sound in general. I had thought about the suggestion from Panos, keeping the fan running, and I think I will try this with a relay. The aft cabins are definitely warmer after running the engine and since we are now based in Greece, this is not so good.

This summer I placed a wireless thermometer in the engine compartment.
The highest temperature I measured was 46 ° Celsius (115 ° F). This was when the engine was turned off.
When the engine is running, the temperature is somewhat lower.
I have no engine fan.

Nick, it is probably screwed to the wall which will transfer the noise, it did in our case (Hanse 350 2007). If you hang it freely in tiewraps the noise will be reduced.
This year the fan broke down so we are running without it, no problems and I will not replace it.

We had a very noisy fan fitted to our 2008 320 which was so annoying in the first year that I disconnected it for the second year. We noticed a hot diesel engine smell after a long motor in one day. This year I had the boatyard install a manual illuminated (when on) switch under the compaionway ladder which we activate when motoring for more that fifteen minutes.
The blower was VERY noisy.
