Hi,
Three years passed since I got our new 630. Enough time and water passed under the keel and I feel ready to summarize my experience.
In general .
Choice of brand .
Relation with the local dealer :
Model selection : I could be equally happy with the 540 or even the 470.
Best option : The carbon mast and boom
Most used extras : aircondition, 10Kw genset, hydraulic gangway, 3Kw inverter, electric winches, electric toilets,Bose home cinema, TV in salon
Never used extras : rear anchor windlass, DVD in front cabin
Not so useful yet : watermaker - will be used if we cross the Atlantic next year.
Choice of engine (Yanmar 110 Hp)
Choice of propeller (Gori 3blade) : The overdrive feature is b****t.
Choice of sails (North 3DL) : the cruiser - tafeta sailcloth proves too heavy for the jib. Next time I will select lighter cloth
to be continued...

Great post, Panos! Everyone should write a follow-up a few years after they bought their boat. I have been thinking of writing one myself.
I am glad to hear that you are happy with your choices except for the propeller, but that's a minor item you won't use a lot anyway, will you? I also see that you put in "relation to seller". Just shoot them in the knee and you will be sorted.
Before sailing across the Atlantic you should make a detour into the Baltic. It is a lovely place and I will offer you a drink.
Johan

The Simrad system deserves a separate post .
We opted for the full packet which includes : one GB40 plotter with a monitor in the navigation station one GB40 plotter driving two monitors next to the steering wheels SIMRAD wind vane trnsducer GPS receiver AIRMAR speed-depth-temperature sensor RC42 rate compass two IS20 wind instruments - two IS20 combi instruments AIS transponder with separate GPS antenna AP24 autopilot control unit AC42 autopilot computer Jefa rudder servo motor DX42s radar 2kw radome RS82 dVHF system WR20 remote commander
Well???
How did this complicated system perform?
When everything works , the system performs excellently. - the GB40 leaves nothing to be desired, the instruments show the correct values and they are averaging out the wave and mast movement effects. The autopilot steers the boat so good that I trust HIM (not it) to steer the boat downwind at 170 degrees , carrying the asymmetric. There is an IF, a BIG IF The system is sensitive to human mistakes. It is based on a MS windows platform! and if you are not good with computers then you can run into trouble. Every time I let the skipper of the boat alone for a trip, the system collapsed and I had to give restoration instructions over the phone. Too many "dangerous" options are open to the user. Even a innocent "night mode" screen selection turns the screen completely unreadable during the day and one has to memorize the exact keystrokes necessary to restore to day mode.
Also the simnet (NMEA 2000) is a plus since all talk to eachother and all info is everywhere available. BUT THERE IS A BIG BUT : if one of the many components fails then the simnet might stop and NOTHING WORKS! This happened a few times. The user must be warned in advance and a plan B must be available. The way that Hanse connects the simnet does not help to prepare a plan B. (a plan B could be to disconnect a selected simnet plug, so that at least the nav station plotter, the GPS receiver, the autopilot computer and control unit continue to work, separated from the rest of the system)
My conclusion : If one is good with computers (and /or complicated mobile phones) and is prepared to spend time to learn it, then I definitely recommend it.

It's good to hear that you're happy with your boat in general, Panos...you must be quite proficient at fixing multiple issues that ARE troubling every Hanse owner every once in a while...bearing in mind that you've got a biggest so far Hanse with a tremendous number of items on board and that your dealer helps you out only after getting "shot in the knee" I can only take off my hat out of respect for you Admiral...Thumbs up!!!
PS...there's one thing that bothers me in your post...how come you assert that you could be equally happy with a 540 or even a 470???

Hi Panos Good post, we have now had 'Abenaki' 430e for 3 years and I can't think of a negative experiance with the boat or the UK Hanse dealer, the most anoying item had been the poor quality Halyard and sheet for the self taking Jib, but they lasted 3 years of constant trimming, we now have new Marlow braid items and the difference is remarkable. I think that the majority of issues that Hanse owners come accross can be easily sorted out by a customer friendly dealer and thankfuly thats what we have in the Hanse UK dealer team. Perhaps every one should buy through them and then get them delivered fully sorted. Ken PS Congratulations on the promotion

Firstly Panos, congratulations on being promoted to Admiral, your plethora of posts has been an inspiration to many of us. BUT what concerens me is that Johan has offered to provide you with a drink if you visit the baltic, this is only available if you do the customery greeting.
I think also you need to, as you have the flag ship of the Hanse fleet at least fly the hanse flag......
Well done on the promotion.

Thanks for the info. I did not know about this boat as I thought that there are only 3 630e in Greece and I know all their owners. For a second I thought that some dealer is playing a game against me, but after examining the specs this boat is not mine : it is of 2007 not 2008 , has a Volvo engine while mine has a Yanmar, etc etc. The colour seems to match, but could be a coincidence.

After close examination of the photos I know this boat. It belongs to a Russian guy and he had a retractable keel which had a problem. The retractable keel is lying there and a new standard keel is attached to the boat. Also this boat has a inox bow protection plate which is easy to recognise. The colour of the boat is grey not blue. The owner painted it with awlgrip colours and is very beautiful.

@windsurfer : I started to miss sailing alone or with my wife. The 630 is a very nice and desirable boat but I am "trapped" to have at least a permanent crew on board and singlehanded sailing is completely out of question.

Hi panos,
If you are missing a two handed trip a lot, I only can give you the tip to go to a 470e!! Best to sail with your wife and for me also the best boat for racing with a crew, in or offshore!!
All time a handbrite

I did not realize you came from Greece
& now you have let slip that you want a smaller boat !!
So here is an idea - flog the H63, buy an H320 ( you will love it)
With the rest of the change send some of our 120 Billion trillion euros back
Then I could buy a 355 out of my pension & Johan could by loads of spares- rudders , swim platforms, windows etc. The euro would be saved , you would be a hero & the Hanse flag would prosper & we could all go sailing together. the world's problems solved at a stroke

Interesting discussion, I sail my 430 single-handed. Is it possible with the 545 or do you need two-handed or a whole crew for this boat also?

Hmm. I thought the 630 would offer shorthanded crusing. But you are right about the shorthanded options with the 470. I can use my 470 singlehanded in any conditions. Up to apr. 12 knots i can fly the Asymetric Spinnaker of +200 M2 if the waves are not too big - the autopilot will not hold the boat stable long enough for me to pull the snuffer down.
I do agree on your opinions about Hanse. After 4 seasons i have not found a replacement for my 470e meaning apr - but the carbon rig would be nice to have on the 470 The closest option for me would be the Shipman 50 in full carbon.

Hi Panos, Can you give some feedback about the hull condition, any color fade, especially in way of fenders ?

Dear Panos, After six years of sailing a 470 I can agree on most of your comments, except for the watermaker (Schenker 60) we very often used as it was difficult to get water in Greece if you have a 2.60m draft. Our Simrad - which is of course much simpler than yours - collapsed about 3 times in these years loosing their IP-adresses but as you say if someone is willing to study manuals you can manage such situations.
Even your comments on the dealership are totally correct. (Mine was Dutch-Croatian but nothing better) It's a pity Hanse does not do more to train dealers as they are absolutely crucial for the image of the brand. After one year of sailing our Hanse I knew a lot more than my dealer! I often missed the commitment to the job! but it may be better now. Of course it's difficult to make a Swiss guy happy.
Final question: Do you stick to Hanse? Ever looked at a Bordeaux 60? (http://www.cnb-yachts.com/) The B60-owners also seem to be a sworn in community like Hanse owners. If I had the money I would buy her right away!

Good post Panos, what I find so good about revelations is that, it positions ourselves more rationally with our personal opinion on our boat and / or dealer.
With my Hanse 470e 2010 ( 4th season coming ) I had so many problems that owners of Hanse would never believe. Almost went through everything in 3 years.
Just for respect I would like to use your post as a template to post my comments on mine in 470 section of course. Would suggest that every section does it the same way. That way a excel tabloid could be made for quick references!

@ Tobo, The CNB60 is not a pretty boat. It looks like they try to fit too many design ideas on to it. But the CNB72... Wow what a yacht, and it's only 2,6 mill Euro ex. vat and extras .
Here is a landmark for Hanse if they decide to move up in the 70+ segment.

A fantastic post, Panos . the suggestion of Jeancharlesleb is also absolutely top. I agree with his 470 experience and if we all follow a standard template there could be a moment that Hanse and its dealers start to listen....
