I can report that last weekend saw the meeting of two Hanse 341s and one Hanse 342 on Angel Island off Sausalito in the San Francisco Bay. The odd thing about it was that it was joined by a pale Swede that was on a tourist trip with his wife to San Francisco. The pale guy happens to be me (not much sun in Sweden this time of year) and the trip was a birthday gift for my pale wife. (She's better looking than me so she will not take that as an offence)
Before going to San Francisco I thought I should just mention it to some of the myHanse members in the area and they welcomed us with open arms. We just had an absolutely fabulous time and I wish it would have lasted for longer.
We were picked up in South Beach to sail on "iliohale" passed Alcatraz to Angel Island. I am myself not very used to sail in tidal waters but I enjoyed tacking back and forth in almost the same spot before we eventually got under the Bay Bridge.
It was also great to get to steer a Hanse 341 with a wheel. The wheel was on the options list when I ordered my 342 and I got to see what I was missing.

On Angel Island we joined the 341 "Javelin" and the 342 "Grey Ghost". I had such a good time chatting and comparing boats that I never found time to leave the pontoon. Angel Island looks like it would be an island that could be explored for days so it is a shame I cannot even claim to have put my foot on it.

On the way back we did a little improvised racing. Since I was just a mere crew member and not the judge I cannot tell you who won.
Anyway, here are some pictures:
Grey Ghost is trying to catch up with Javelin
Grey Ghost with her "A-sail" - the assymetric
The relaxed crew on ilihale. The only one who is working is me. Those of you who are familiar with the AP16 know that "A" on the autopilot display means that the Admiral is steering.

Last time i was in San Francisco i dreamed of sailing in the bay. And you did it! This is such a superb area.
Very nice to see so many Hanses sailing in this area now. I love it.

I have a lot to thank this forum for. The many nice people I have been discussing with together with the people I have met in really life more than compensates for any problem I might have had with my boat. The choice of a Hanse was a good one after all, if you consider this forum.
A friend of mine got interested in the "race" and I had to explain that the pictures in my first post are not in chronological order. We sailed out of Angel Island and Grey Ghost set their gennaker and sailed quickly away from the other two boats. However, we then started to tack and Grey Ghost had sailed to far under gennaker and became the last boat, which can be seen in one of my pictures. She later overtook us, so I think she did well. But then again, I am not to say who was fastest since the current could be favourable to one boat but not to another.
For those who believe that sexy sails make your boat sail faster, here's another picture of Grey Ghost.

It is a shame I didn't bring my blue one. Maybe the blue ones are the fastest?

Dave Therefore the blue pigment gives a better balast ratio giving us a better pointing angle and better up wind performance. (and we stand out in the crowd) Ken

Tiller or steering wheel. I have a Hanse 341 with a tiller, but plays with the idea of installing a steering wheel. So what is the best?

@Holby Thank you Dave - Yeah I am still crazy with the grey colour
@ Agathe Ulrik, my first choice would be tiller steering, but (as some discussions at this forum indicate) it might be just as important that the combination of rudder design and tiller / wheel is the right one. The two apparently need different rudder designs to work optimally. Especially the position of the rudder stock seems important as tiller steering (probably) requires a more balanced rudder than wheel stering or it tends to get too hard to steer. (Take a look under the 320 section).
That said, I am in fact quite happy with my own wheel stering especially when motoring.

Hi Johan,
Haven't spoken to you since you were out here. We really enjoyed meeting you and Cristal and it was a fun day of sailing. Speaking of tides, we had a 5.7 kt Ebb last Saturday. We sailed 11 miles from Berkeley to Sausalito in 12 kts of wind in an hour and 20 minutes (dock to dock). If we were going against that tide it would have been a long trip.

Christel and I had a wonderful time in your company, Gary. Thank you very much for having us. It was also very interesting to steer your boat. She felt the same as mine if you take away the fact that you have a wheel. The tides were also very interesting to familiarize with. I am currently working on my pictures from the trip. I'll let you know when I am finished. Johan
