Our boat has been dogged since its early days by a deadful creaking/groaning gooseneck. The noise is more than just an irritant since it reverberates through the mast. Our boat is 370e #87 from 2006. The Sparcraft agent has had a look and cannot find anything obviously wrong. Has anyone else had a similar problem with the Sparcraft gooseneck ( we have experienced the alarming "bang" from the Sparcraft vang discussed on another thread and have learned how to cope with that). But the creaking and groaning gooseneck has so far defeated us. We have tried silicone grease, WD40 and regular replacement of the nylon washer. Suggestions for a solution will be very welcome.

Hello John,
Your post got me thinking to the effect that my gooseneck stopped creaking after I replace the 12mm diameter clevis pin with a bolt. Of course, it still pays to lubricate the joints with a dry silicon spray, but since I replaced the pin in June 2010 the fitting has been quiet. I replaced the pin when a fellow 370 owner pointed out that the pin was about to fall out after the split pin had failed. I decided that a bolt and nyloc nut would be a much more secure solution.

Do you mean where the end of the boom connects to the mast, if so then our gooseneck (320) makes a highly irritating creaking noise, usually when sailing in very light wind, I have no idea what causes this, Ian's solution is worth a try. ------------- "Discovery" Hanse 320 Brixham, UK |

I am not sure what you are exact writing about. If this is the "gooseneck" than it is important that the nylon washer is underneath the shown position. Maybe this helps  ------------- Blake 370

We had this problem and eventually worked out that it was not the gooseneck but the rivets holding the goosneck to the mast. They apparently were underspeced on our 320. This meant that after a couple of years there was a lot of play in them. In heavy winds there was a gap in the windward part of the gooseneck.
We eventually had the largest monel ( sp) rivets put in which cured the problem. Possibly a good idea to have a look at the goosneck next time your sailing. ------------- Nick71 Hanse 320 |

The join between mast and boom can have a lot of load and in turn friction. I find a blast of silicon lube sorts the problem. However I have used WD40 knowing this is not the best fix. Simon ------------- Swanned off |

Thank you every one for some promising suggestions. Ian, I think I will follow your example and replace the clevis pin with a bolt and locnut. Thank you too Peter-Blake for your pix and comment on the nylon washer. That is indeed what I was referring to. We have found that our nylon washer at the bottom takes no load - the boom fitting sits up against the upper part of the mast bracket - in other words, metal to metal. We are thinking of trying to put in an extra nylon washer at this point. But there may not be enough clearance. I will certainly check the rivets - perhaps I will need to refit the entire gooseneck assembly! A final thought - it sometimes seems that the noise comes from the boom fitting rotating round the vertical bolt. The only cure for that has been a lubricant of one kind or another.
