Hello,

looking to purchase a 301 in the spring & would like some pointers on what to watch out for, probably looking at the wing keel, with a 20HP engine

Hi Robbie

20 horses are probably more than enough I have the Volvo MD2020 and find 19Hp plenty. Volvo recomend replacing the saildrive seal every 7 years. It will probably be due for replacement if she is second hand. If your planing on using a genaker make sure you have the primary winches for it. My 301 came with a sh*ty Nimo jib furler and I had to replce it with a quality Harken after one season.
Nothing else I can think of and you will hve lots of fun with her

Hi Robbie,My 301 has the volvo MD2020 and wing keel so I am probably biased but I believe it is the best spec as it gives you powerful motoring performance when required and shallow water ability without compromising the sailing performance.I prefer the white hull as the dark blue version looks great but can suffer from 'fading/chalking' and needs more polishing to keep it smart.The hull is strongly built and I have owned her for 9 years without any major structural problems.Like most boats in this price bracket over the years some  niggles have had to be addressed with assembly quality but all sorted out without specialist knowledge.
If you have sailed one you will already know they are quick and well balanced but check the sails are in decent condition as a new main and jib of normal woven polyester sails will cost you about £2000.My engine is regularly serviced resulting in no engine problems (now about 600 hours).Friction can build up with the rudder stock binding on the bottom bearing so check the tiller moves easily.Hope you find a good one -you will love sailing her.

We all think our kids are the best and I have the wing with the MD2010, engine is low hours at around 400, however, she will go at 5 knots forever and over 6 when ask for extended periods, we took her to the North of Scotland a couple of years a go from the East coast of England andbeen  through the Caley Canal twice.  Sailing is an absolute joy, when over powered you will run out of keel very suddenely as we found out during WHYW.

Well Dancing Demon, my 301, is a well mannered yacht, robust, comfortable, and a good cruising yacht with a good turn of speed. She is a wing keeled version but with a Volvo 2010 ( 10 Hp) engine. Well serviced engine done about 450 Hrs since 2007, when i bought her. I have yet to come accross a situation when the 10HP engine, was not enough. She will motor at 5 knts in a quiet sea at about 2,200 rpm and this cost me about 1/2 ltr per hour but she will go a little faster but then burn more fuel, so why bother, just plan a bit better. Sadly in the area I sail in ( of the Welsh coast and upwards, it is a fairly tidal area so a bit of motoring is required to catrch certain tidal gates. The only thing I would suggest is to make sure you do not have East Sails, if East sails were fitted thwn I would ask for a reduced price and get some others. Apart from that make sure the hull is clean and tidy, anything else you need to check will be picked up by your surveyor.
On the whole a great little ship that has taken me on many a mile throught the years, the lowest annual mileage is about 1100 and the highest is about 1400 miles.
Well worth the average price advertised. BUT then i am biased as i have one already...Big smile
I would only part with her if it was to buy a 371...... Big smile

thanks for the updates guys, I do my sailing in the North East corner of Scotland, lot of drying harbours, could you sit on the bottom with the wing keel/rudder

I do my sailing on the west coast of Wales, where there most of the harbours dry out to some extent.
I manage to visit most, and either anchor or moor in the deep channel.
I understand that you can sit on the bottom whilst leaning on the harbour wall, but I have never done this.
At times i wish for a bilge keeler but but I think if I had one i would wish more times for a fin keeler.
You have to decide yourself what sort of sailing you want to do.  I would love to sail my Hanse 301 into CB harbour where I grew up ( Cruden Bay) but I think I would have to go to Peterhead Marina and then travel by bus to CB.
I am not sure where on the east coast of Scotland you would be sailing out of, but you many fine Harbours Lossiemouth, I think is dredged to about 2mtrs and a winged Hanse draws 1.1 mtrs, you also have Macduff, Whitehills, as mentioned Peterhead ( my old school town), and down south places like Port Edgar, but I do agree you have more options if you are a bilge keeler like Anstruther ( a lovely harbour town with great Fish and Chips) and great pubs, one over looking the harbour on NE end of the Harbour.
I wish you well with your decision. I had the same choice to make as you and I still went for the 301, and I have not been disappointed.

Dave,

I'm berthed at Banff Marina, but I think I am going to opt for the deep fin keel, as I am looking for performance over getting into Portsoy & Gardenstown harbours.

So I think anyone looking to sell a deep fin with the 20hp engine, drop me a line as I plan to purchase around March next year.

Is it in this marina you are berthed? I was at the sailing club in Banff three years ago.

I had a Macgregor 26x berthed at the 1st set o pontoons as you came, I hope you has an enjoyable stay at Banff. Looking for a more performance orientated boat now, the Mac was a fine starter boat, looking to be more competitive at the sailing club races

Hi Robbie,
Just picked up the thread. Like Holby I am based in Wales,berthed in Cardiff Bay. Most of my sailing is in the Bristol Channel with its well known tides. There are times that I wish for a bilge keeler,but as all sailors know the wind is usually on the nose when you want to go somewhere. So the only way is the deep fin,and the 301 will sail as close to the wind,  closer than most, other than out and out racers.
As Holby mentioned,some people will dry out 301s against a wall. I have done this in Illfracombe,and it was my first attempt.All went well even though I watched her down and then back up with my heart in my mouth. I would do it again,but it is worth checking out the ground under you with some locals.
I like the 19hp volvo engine and the boats lines. However, there is always a trade off.You get a fast streamlined hull without lots of freeboard,but you loose out on accommodation.Personally I like a boat that sails well,but if I had lots of money I would like the creature comforts as well.
