Hi everyone,

having now ordered my 461 I am in the process of choosing various equipment. I know auto piltos have been discussed on the forum before, but I would really value  some input as I have no real experience with them, (my boats have all been tiller versions!).

I have narrowed things down to Raymarine, and I think ST7000 and s3, I have been told of a drive unit by LEWMAR called the MAMBA drive which is fitted to a 461 and works well. how about the Raymarine type 2L linear drive? does anyone have experience of either?

Thanx in adavnce for any input

Charlie.

Hi Charlie,

Sorry I did not see your Q before now and maybe you've moved on since.

We did not go with the 'conventional' linear drive as recommended to be added to the starboard steering pedestal base.  To do so meant we had to mount it in such a way it requires a cover to built into the starboard aft cabin.  IMHO looking ugly and taking up space.

We instead had a bracket fabricated to allow the drive to work direct on the rudder stock.  The added advantage of this direct drive is our ability to steer via the drive unit if ever the starboard lewmar steering rods / mechanisms went awol.

Hope you see this in time to get whats right for you. And enjoy the new boat.

JOHN

We ordered a 470 recently (being built in March 07) and they put on the Simrad AP 16 autopilot. What's your opinion on that? Can you put on Raymarine if the rest is Simrad?

Hi Tobo, congrats on the order. I'm testing a 461 on saturday in prep for ordering a 470. Having ordered, what advise/conclusion did you come to re the ventilations in the aft cabins, and the helming seats??

I bet you're looking forward to next summer!!

Hi Tobo,

I'm pretty sure there's no problems interfacing a Raymarine Autopilot with other kit but if you've already got the Simrad pilot not sure why you might wish to incur the expense of changing?

We went with Raymarine overall as I've always had good experiences with their kit - but I doubt if either unit is significantly different than the other.

By the way, the Lewmar mamba drives referred to by others are not appropriate for the 470 wire mechanism.  They are a unit designed specifically to bolt onto Lewmar rod steering so were recommended for the 461 and 531.  As it happens, we did not go that way either, chosing a Raymarine drive arm onto our rudder stock.

Cheers

Dear Brad

Concerning the helm seats I got the information from my Hanse dealer in Croatia that they are working on it. We didn't talk about the ventilation. Is that a problem to keep an eye on? As I met Michael Schmidt in Genova and speaking German as it's my mother tongue I suppose I could suggest some improvements. He already reacted on my proposal to make it possible to lock the anchor box and the big aft cover. (No insurance pays for unlocked items being stolen!). Secondly they're working on better navigator seat (I told him that the present camping seat is a shame for every skipper!) and there might be a change to get a better office table in the owner's cabin (if you have the A2 layout with the bed on port side). I was swearing at this stupid mixture between beauty- and working table with a too small table, no room to put down the feet and no bookshelf. I liked the version on the 461 so much. We are also planning to alter the achor box, by forgetting the arm and splitting it into a smaller compartment for the anchor and making a second (waterproof) cover for a sail stowage room. ( Hanse sailing should be easy and you shouldn't bother with dragging around a 40 pounds sailing bag, shouldn't you). But it all comes down to what it will cost.

Cheers

Hi Tobo,

Yes please, make all these suggests to the company, see if they can't make some of them available. Agree th Nav seat is a really let down, but I'm sure it can be improved.

On the ventilation, i think it was john that commented that the aft cabins lacked enough opening hatches in the photos that were posted. Valid point to if you are going to warm climates like me. So it is that it#'ll be a problem to watch might just need a sizable fan down there!!

Is there enough room in the anchor locker for sail bags?? How are you going to make the changes. I assume the deep well remains the chain locker and the aft flat shallow part is for the sails??

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Guys,
I believe the 470 anchor locker is the same size as the 461 in which case there is enough room to hold both the Bruce anchor and its launcher arm, plus a full sized spinnaker.  We know because thats where we keep ours when underway.
Really good ldea above about getting both anchor locker and lazerette with a lock fitted.......we had to improvise with a locking bar to secure our lazarette.
Also we found we need a 12 v rotating fan in each of the aft 461 cabins - they tend to be used all night when its warm.  They were not expensive - the kind of thing you see in truck cabins.
FYI the 461 aft cabins have opening ports both on the outside cabin top and into the cockpit so one does get some cross draft if there is any breeze - but even thats not enough in high summer months.

Hi John out of interest are keeping the anchor attached to the arm?? The reason i ask as i'm quite fond of the Rocna anchors, but understand that there may well be a limit to the height of the anchor that can be accomodated while attached to the arm???

Any advise?

Hi Brad,
I suspect you'll find there is still room with the Rocna but it should be easy enough to borrow one and try it out.
We have the 25 kg Bruce which is my preferred choice anyway, so pleased when it came as standard.
Our spinnaker in its sock fits down alongside and around the anchor and launcher - bit of a stuffing job - but it does all get in OK.
Plus be aware we also keep our second anchor strapped down in there also - plus our demountable fog horn!
Cheers
JOHN
