Hi,

I am considering entering the Round the Island race next year. I have never participated in any race other than local club racing and I would appreciate any advice on how to prepare my 370. If I make the effort to sail round from Essex to join in I would prefer not to sail at the back of whatever division 370's sail in.

I carry a fair amount of extra weight over the brochure dry weight for a 370 e.g. helmsman's seat/bathing platform, anchor winch and battery, bow-thruster and battery, 65 metres of 9mm calibrated chain. My keel is the heavier shallow version at 165cm. Is it worth having the boat weighted in sailing trim?

Looking at the coding requirements the only missing item of note is that I do not have locking washboards. Are the organisers keen to check every boat for 100% compliance?

I am not sure whether my Code 0 will be useful. It is great sail and I use it a lot, but it is not a genoa and cannot be used closer than 40 to 45 degrees to the wind.

Ian,
I suspect that few boats are checked; you will sign a declaration so the wash boards will be OK.
It is not too dificult to modify the sliding section of the companion way with a latch to pass this reg and at the same time improve boat.
Weight is always an issue, the cost makes me think it is not worth it for a one off race the gain on handicap is small; have a word with Yeoman he will find you a store for the race to keep your spare gear in , the time stripping and reloading the boat will be better value than paying for a measurer. In my opinion.
I would leave the code 0 on board, presuming you have the crew to use it well.
