Does anyone happen to know the exact or approximate figure for the weight of the standard 342 main sail?

Thanks!

Given that my sail is 33,5 sqm the weight should be 26 kg. Still a bit heavy to carry on a plane.

Hello Johan
My mainsail (the original Doyle) weighs 19 kg.
But why drag the sail up in a plane. Build a hot air balloon of the sail and fly home  Wink.

That is good to know. That's less than the 26 kg I thought. That means I could bring my main sail to my favourite sail maker in Stockholm and have the leech line arrangement modified.

Today was the dress rehearsal. I managed to put the standard jib (approx. 20 square metres) in a suitcase. I found a good place to fold it at my daughter's daycare with the help of her and her friends. It reminds you how much easier it is to fold a sail indoors than on a windy pontoon. The suitcase now weighs 16 kg.

The reason I am bringing my standard jib to the boat is that my jib deluxe got damaged. I am however not bringing that sail back as I want to sort out the leech of the main first.

Johan,
What went wrong?
I think we all wish to avoid the modification you have made.

It is not a modification. It is just a sail that I was talked into buying that did not last very long. Sail makers tell me today that Pentex is not a good material for sail cloth as it is sensitive to both sun and water.

Already after three years the leech was worn out and had to be repaired (picture below) and the damage seen in my previous picture was discovered just the day before I was going to http://www.myhanse.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=6914&title=emilias-first-race" rel="nofollow - race for the first time in my life.

In the picture below you also see the expensive UV-protection that had been painted to the leech.

I repaired the damage so that I could participate in the race and you can see the blue tape I used in the picture below.

For my type of sailing this jib was not the best option as it has been a bit too expensive for what it does. Maybe I should have taken off my rose-tinted glasses when I talked to the sail maker. Just because he slipped "faster" and "better pointing ability" into the conversation does not mean that it is a dramatic change in comparison to the standard jib.

The reason why I am taking my main to my "favourite sail maker" is that he is one that I trust. I don't want to buy a dream, I want a sail that lasts.

I now know that the weight of my main sail is 24 kg. It went fine to take it on the plane.

Finally my main has arrived at the loft. My sail maker was impressed that it was still looking so good after approximately 10 000 M.

The sail was transported the last bit (22 km back and forth) on my bicycle trailer so my already slim body got even more fit.

The reason I am posting the below picture is to show that I belong to the group of sailors who can manage without a car. Is there anybody else who does not have a car among the members of the forum? I am curious to know.

Even without the car, perfect organized!  But every year in the core part of winter  I prefered take away both my sails to wash at home (in my common building terrace...) and keep them in a dry attic room for the this part of bad season.
This year I'm thinking to avoiding to do it. The problem is that every rainings, water remains in the lazy bag, sometimes for days, and emptying it needs some time.. Diego

Lets move on and forget my question who among the forum members can manage without a car. The number of replies to my question tells it all.

Now I hear you ask about what needed to be done to my main sail. (No, I don't, but I am going to tell you anyway.)

The clew looked really bad because of the initial years with the lazy-bag supplied from Hanse in combination with the lazyness of the owner of the boat. It looked like something they found on the Wasa ship.

The big problem, however, was that the leech line cleats were all broken and did not perform their job any longer. I had to tie a knot to stop the flutter in the main.

Now for the exiting part - the repaired sail.

There is a new leech, a new leech line and new cleats. This looks much better and will work much better and will give the sail a new life. All done by North Sails in Stockholm.
