My sails are at the sailmaker for a normal service and minor damages.

I discussed with my sailmaker if they can sew on an extra leach peace supported by very long vertical pins. That way I should be able to trick my main in to "thinking" there is an overlapped headsail. This would give the headsail much more effect.

Does anyone have experience with changing the headsail? Is it worth doing?

If you extend the natural curvature of the sail you will create a " bag" at the leech so would have to put less tension on it.
This would not suit the front part of the aerofoil & you may have to point lower rather than higher to compensate
Of course it depends on the initial sail shape
Also stretch in the new cloth will be different to stretch in the old cloth ( depends on material ) so the shape could deteriorate quicker

Samuel, thanks for your thoughts.
I will certainly bring your points forward to the sailmaker for some hopefully good answers.

I agree with your points but maybe i should clarify that the extra Leach peace should go on the upper 3' of the sail where the is relative flat. Also, the vertical carbon pins will be apr. 2/3 down the sail to support the shape.

I realise the difference in materials could end up giving different stretch but i think a good sailmaker would be able to compensate by design and material selection.

A good sailmaker can give new life to an old sail. A bad one can totally ruin a sail. A good sailmaker must be 100% sure he is going to succeed because he is putting his fame in risk for a small fee.
Conclusion: the sailmaker is either a bad sailmaker having nothing to lose or a genius sailmaker sure of himself.
Famous quote: the problem with society is that geniuses are full of doubts while stuppids are so sure of themselves.

If you put all above in the blender : I would not do it!

Panos, it turns our ny sailmaker is a genius He does not Think he Can do a successfull change of the leach.

So I am going to settle with a regular sailservice for now.
