Hi,
About six weeks ago on our way back from Mykonos to Athens we faced huge waves from the nose and dying wind. We had to motor for about six hours against the steep wave front. The boat hardly made any progress at 4-5 knots. Once we reached the Kalamaki marina and lowered the engine revs the yanmar dyed and refused start anymore. We struggled with the bow thruster and the storm jib (which we hoisted in one second!) and we managed to berth. After about one hour we tried the engine and it started without problem. We diagnosed the problem as some dirt clogging the fuel intake because of the slamming. Since then the engine started to stall without warning, mainly when the engine was very hot. This happened very rarely and it was impossible to troubleshoot. We investigated the stop relay, the stop solenoid, the tanks for diesel bug or water and we checked both the rackor and the engine filter without success. Finally today the engine gave up and did not want to start. We sailed back to the Skiathos harbor and called a mechanic. After thorough examination it was found that the engine fuel filter had a hairline crack and when the engine got hot air entered the fuel system and killed the engine. When the filter cooled down the crack closed.

I can imagine frustrating process of finding a source of a problem. Hardly to happend frequently, but nice to know what strange options you have to consider looking for fix :-)
