By resent checking all through hull locations on my 411 I found that the drain to sea from the gas bottle box did not have a seacock. The through hull location is well under the waterline. As far as I could see it is just a ½” or ¾” hose going from the fitting to the box. The gap between the hull and the gas box is narrow, approximately 100 mm. The through hull fitting got a 90º bend to get room for the hose.  It might be possible to get a seacock in there, but certainly not simple.

Has anyone made this modification?

I will look at mine tomorrow, never even thought it would be below the waterline, thanks

Hi Jovani,

I have the same situation in my boat (#188 Smile) and I am thinking placing it at the bow. I have to redo the entire antifouling this winter so I am thinking of finding a new place for this seacock too.

The problem is that the seacock is under the waterline

a) you would need a seacock
b) if the water covers the thruhull or the seacock would be closed the whole ventilation for the gas box doesn't help.

Solution: thru hull above the waterline.

I am very surprised that the drain for the gasbox is under the waterline!
This is only ok if there is another drain for gas above the waterline. maybe the drain you mention is for water only, so the box can empty after a rainshower.

Hanse would never get a CE-Certifcat neither would any yacht get a insurance without a gas drainage above the waterline! So i think there must be another drainage!

Totally agree with P-B, the whole idea of the vent is so that gas can escape. If the vent is below the waterline, no gas is ever going to escape and the vent is no longer effective causing a safety issue. The through hull for this function should not be below the waterline and should not have a seacock.

So this thread caused me to wonder.....Below waterline would work if propane was soluble in water.  After some research I gather it isn't (though propanol is)! Polar propane versus non-polar water molecule but I'll leave the detail for the chemists.

My gas bottle box is in the cockpit (just before the steering wheel) there is no drain, only two openings in the door which allow gas and/or water to escape. Never had any problems with it.

That is the standart how it works on many hanses and this seems to be CE conform! And that is ok!
The openings in the door of the gas box drain into the cockpit. As the cockpit is open at the end of the boat, the gas can flow outside of the boat.

So no problem with it.

It would only be a problem if you have a completely closed cockpit without a drain above waterline!

The 411 design must be differen. It is a rather large gas box with space for two 5kg. The drain i mention i my comment in February is a water drain, not a gas drain. There are no gas drain. The location of this box is such that gas will not get into the hull, but could remain in the gas box in case of a leakage. May be this clearfy? My concern was the hose from the trough hull to the gas box. I did install a valve to be able to close in case of leakage in the hose. It is just a short hose, but anyway!

I am sure I will be corrected but I was under the impression to get the CE cert, the gas box had to vent to atmosphere, as mine does on the 301....
