I would like to have speed displayed on my mast for crew.
Looking around it seems that Simrad does not offer this option.
B&G does of course but unsure if how this fits into Simrad system.
Wireless would be best but can't find anything other Velocitaech and Rockbox producst which offer distance to line calculations and other stuff I already have.
Anybody have any thoughts on this??

Years ago I used a Tacktic instrument which was made for this purpose. Check out their latest instruments online.

With the IS12 system, I have 3 Mega Displays at the mast - might be able to pick one up off eBay?

Or in the IS20 system you could always use a Combi (Simnet)

in the IS 40 world, a colour display can be programmed to display just about anything (Simnet)

Or the Triton Multi function display using NMEA 0183 (a lot of the other displays, e.g. HV, do not have NMEA connections).

At least, at first blush, that's what I think the options are.
Cheers

I agree a IS20 Graphic will do the job perfectly. IS12 MEGA is tough to get.... look at the effective hight of the numbers. for your boat that is by far enough and quite cheap!

Just take your windsensor cable, go to the instrument on the mast and than with a 2m cable further to the mastfoot and you are done!

Tactktic uses Wifi, if that is your preferred connection method and, I think, solar power, but I like the IS20 Graphic.

As Charles mentions Tacktick are excellent and for me the unit of choice... There are wireless and are solar powered, and just from being used on a cloudy day they will charge and once fully charged will last I think about 100hrs, so no worries about going flat during the night..... but if this is your misfortune then again it is not a major worry , as you can unclip from the mast bracket and with a bit of ingenuity power it of a small 9v battery ( the PP3) battery and by using this for about 20 - 30 mins will last you for many hours.

They are now owned by Raymarine.. I use Tacktick on DD and I would fit Tacktick on any other boat, but it is usually a personal choice as to what you like, Graphics, etc, so look at all on the market and then decide yourself.

Hi!

This is my first post here, so first I will give my big THANKS to all previous contributors. I've already got a lot of very good advice here and there sure is much more waiting to be found.

Now to the question. I've just built a mast display system using low cost instruments (NASA Clipper speed and compass, and Advansea wind) connected to my IS20 system using an AT10 Simnet-to-NMEA0813 converter.

So far I'm satisfied and the 32 mm number format of the standard size displays is quite large enough to be useful at the 4-5 metres viewing distance.

However, one caveat: It appears that the speed information from Simnet sent out on the NMEA0183 bus is the uncalibrated sensor value. So the mast display shows a speed that differs with (I think) the calibration factor 1.15 which I have programmed into the IS20 Graphic instrument.

To make things worse the NASA Clipper easylog display does not have a local calibration feature!

So my advice is, if you want to use NMEA0183 data for your mast repeater, make sure the mast display has a speed calibration feature.

Another option would be if the calibrated speed data can be output to NMEA0183. If any of you have insights in this, I'd really appreciate your advice? Apparently some speed sensors can be calibrated at the sensor itself, which would solve the problem, but how is that done? I see that Johan has written some posts on related topics but haven't really understood all yet....
Best,
Nick

Welcome Nick,
Thanks for the heads up on the speed problem. This was avoided in the older systems (IS-15 and IS-12) where the sensors were wired directly to an instrument. Today's networks have "intelligent" sensors that connect directly to the network. Have you looked at the NMEA sentences to see if there is a different type that has the info you're looking for? (i.e. perhaps you can get the display to look at different data if it's there)

It seems to me the most simple solution is a GPS that displays speed with nice big numbers, runs on solar power or batteries and attaches to mast with Velcro straps.
I don't need start line pinging or heading or tacking info,  just speed so my crew can see if they are making a difference when they trim sails and I can pay attention to heading and avoiding other boats.
Is there really nothing out there that is this simple???
Maybe I can make some money here if a build and market one myself???Wink
