Hi everybody!

My Jefa 150 KgM autopilot direct drive unit (type I) has become noisy. It is still working, but I wish to open to check what is going on in order to prevent future damage during the next cruise season. Has anybody any experience/suggestion/photos about how to open it and if it requires a special care?

Thanks a lot

GC

May I suggest to return it to Jefa for maintenance?
They are very professional . Noise means wear and if you open it most probably you will need some parts to replace so you will not escape from Jefa after all.

I had the same on my drive, sent it back to JEFA and they refurbished it on warranty. However that is 3 years ago.

That issue was a serial fault because of bad sealing which they made better later on.

I wouldn't work on that myself.

Another 400 owner and friend of mine had his fail.  He took it apart and discovered that water leaked in and rusted the pancake motor.  The motor seized up completely.  It seems that the earlier models weren't sealed as they should have been. The motor was, 'toast' and needed replacing.  Replacing it proved to be extremely difficult as the source was China.  Eventually the motor was sourced and reinstalled.

I decided to take mine apart.  I inspected it and found no problem except for the seal which was poor at best.  I cleaned and re-greased the motor then sealed it so no water would enter the housing.  It was a very simple job to do.  Just followed the drawings.  It has been fine for the last two years.

I would recommend everyone do the same as preventative measure.

It was a straight forward job ... for me at least :-)
