Does anyone have experience with Semco teak sealer (or other teak treatment formulas) ?
Our dealer says they have been using it with good results on some boats.

Of course we could just let the teak weather but the Semco stuff doesn't seem too involved to apply.
Wondering if anyone has positive or negative experience with this?

Been using Semco for four years, so am happy with it. Very easy to apply - use a paint brush. I put a coat on about three times a season. Before re coating, I use a well worn or light scouring pad and water to lightly clean the surface, scouring with the grain, then rinsing off with water. When dry, I paint a coat of Semco.

hi Charles,

which color Semco do you use? Natural?
Do you do one coat at a time, spread 3 times over the season? Or multiple coats at once?

The dealer recommends 3 coats initially but I'm leaning towards 2 coats followed by a coat seasonally.
How do you determine that a refresh coat is needed?

The reason that teak often doesn't look that great anymore is mold, black and green, on the surface but also inside the wood.
I used Boracol (advised by respected boat builders, HR, X,etc) not easy to get hold of ( not registered in NL) and was really impressed with the result,
Boracoll also won a test in yacht.
You should not have to seal teak, imho.

Bigcatt - yes, I use Natural. Yes, I do one coat three times a season - beginning of Winter, Start of Season and Mid Season. The first time I used it, I put on two generous coats. Be guided by the absorbency of the wood - you want to see the product soaking in and not pooling on top.

I am using SEMCO since many years and I am very happy. I like the Honeytone.
I put two layers every 3 to 4 months.

When I sold an earlier boat it looked like new after 9 years.

Thanks all for the replies. We will give Semco a try. I think Boracol may be hard to get here in the US.
When applying the Semco, should we 'tape' around the teak to prevent the Semco from spilling onto other parts of the cockpit? I believe it doesn't hurt fiberglass, but I'm not sure if it wouldn't stain anything?

The staining is easy to clean off of the gelcoat with Polish. Have some tissue handy for immediate cleaning so no need for masking.
