A short post to let you know that Hanse #136 - Hakuna Matata has now been commissioned and handed over to me at Bayview in Pittwater - just north of Sydney - by Windcraft, the local Sydney dealers.

In short we are delighted and kudos to the team at Windcraft for all the work they have done to help ensure a smooth ON TIME handover. The Windcraft team has been highly professional with an easy approach to helping with all those little worries. Mary, Peter, Damien, Nick and the team couldn’t have been more pleasant and helpful!

My family and I spent time in Kenya and Tanzania hence the name “Hakuna Matata”. The literal translation is, "There are no worries here". And indeed there have not been so far! Of course, as parents, we were also subjected to the Elton John / Tim Rice version of the Lion King and at some stage we’ll let the on-board stereo rip-out the Pumbaa and Timon song across Sydney Harbour! J

My son, Cameron, and I have been out three times to put her through her paces in winds from 8 to 28 knots. She handled everything easily and sails fantastically. The extras we applied - Autopilot System (APS) and 3 blade screw also work well. We will try the Multi-Purpose Sail (MPS) over the weekend!

Thanks to all of you on this forum - especially Clayton and Sin (Sydney based 400 owners) who have given such great feedback on their experiences!

I’ve posted a picture from handover day but I will try to get some better ones over Christmas!

Happy Christmas and happy sailing!

Eddie

Johan,

What is the "rub strake"  on Emilia's side hull made out of?

It's teak. It was on the options list. It's screwed from the inside of the hull. In my own opinion it gives the boat an elegant look.

G'day Johan,

Awesome photos and web site! Your Hanse, partner and dog all look great with the backdrop of your lovely sailing waters! The only downside appears to be the amount of clothing you need to wear to sail!

We share an interest in music, boating, partners and pets! We have many friends and family involved in the Sydney opera and symphony orchestras - I am a confirmed "listener"! Your photos have inspired me to carry a camera on board!

Cordially,

Eddie

Thanks, Eddie!

It's good to hear from someone "down under". Is it true that everything is upside-down there, that you have to hold your hand over the glass not to loose your pint of beer?

We are freezing up here on the northern hemisphere while you are in the summer. I just don't think that's fair...

Your new boat looks fabulous and I am sure you will have a good time aboard in the years to follow. I wonder how sailing is in your area? Around Stockholm we have a beatiful archipelago where you can go from island to island. Then you can easily venture out on the sea and go back before night.

Ha Ha!

I've been to Stockholm twice - stayed in Gamla Stan both times - and loved it but never sailed.

You are right - mercifully we do not have winters so bad that we can't sail! I recall sailing at Cowes week in the UK a few years ago. Great sailing but the nicest memory was drinking Irish coffees in the pub after a cold, wet day on the water.

I'm currently berthed at Bayview in Pittwater which is about 30 miles north of Sydney Harbour (Port Jackson). The links below are PDF's of the waters at Pittwater, the coast down to Sydney Harbour and then the waters in and around Sydney Harbour. You'll see there's plenty of protected and also open ocean sailing to be done.

Hopefully I'll take the boat down near to my home in Sydney (bottom left corner of Mosman Bay) after Christmas sometime.

Cheers

Eddie,

I learnt a lot about your area from the maps. I didn't know you could find so many sheltered places there, I thought you had just the ocean. Wrong I was.

So what are your plans for sailing in the future? Where are you going?

Thanks,

Johan

Congratulations Eddie!

The handover of my new 370e will take place in Greifswald in the beginning of april. The name of the boat is decided, but the font to use is not. When I saw the picture of your boat, my immediate reaction was; "that's the right font". Do you know the font name and is it the same as Hanse uses in the brand name? It looks very similar.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Borge,

The boat sign writing folks who did my name made up the font themselves as they could not find the official font used by Hanse.

I think its close to Comic Sans MS but in a handwriting format. I've been told that it was posted on the MyHanse site somewhere but I searched and did not find it.

We have the Hakuna Matata name in a much smaller size on both sides of the bow between the cove stripe and the gunnel. We thought the two colour blue / grey shadow looked pretty good?

Good luck for April!

Eddie 400#136

PS This is as close as I can find. Hanse Comic Sans MS

The original font is Kaufmann BT. Digiting it on Google you will find a lot of free-font sites

HaHa!

Hi DoppiaG, I had a pretty brutal few minutes trying to work my way through the German Hanse Forum to find the Font!

I should declare that I am an Australian so, as every true Englishman will tell you, we even struggle with the Queens English let alone German. ... I know; we lazy English speakers have it all laid on a plate for us....

I drew a blank on the Hanse Forum but I have located the Kaufmann BT font and can confirm that this is the one used by Hanse. I didn't download it yet. Thank you!

Borge, the type face used by my boat name writers was stylistically similar to the Hanse but probably not as ornate?

Regards

As my kids would say, "that is way cool!"

Did you find a good site to download the font for free?

It seems Hanse has changed the letter H since I got my boat. Now it's not that ornate.

This is how I plan the printing on the transom as soon as the broken bath platform is replaced. The photo is a montage and the font is my hand writing.

Congratulations Eddie on your new boat Hakuna Matata.   It looked like you had some great sailing out on Pittwater and Broken Bay today putting your boat through its pacers.  It was a great day sailing with a stiff breeze from the North East.  My partner was out with me on a bareboat honing her skills in preparation for the arrival off our new 540 Hanse in June.  It is hard to imagine waiting 6 more months for the boat to arrive.

I notice you have a very small bimini on the Boat.  Are you finding it effective in giving you some respite from the sun but also giving you good forward and sail visibility?

Regards Richard

Hi Richard,

I presume you were also out locally as you knew so much of the local weather conditions?

Yes, a great sailing day on Pittwater - only problem was it was cut a little short because of seasonal / family obligations. Here are a few photos from the day and an answer to your bimini question. Oops belay that ... seems both uploading and pasting images has been disabled? Probably temporarily so I'll try again later. OK Got it now!

The bimini is small but adequate for keeping the sun off of the helm. Others have applied a full bimini, dodger and infill which look great but I think it would probably get in my way for sailing. So we slip, slap and slop!

As you probably know, 'Slip-Slop-Slap' is the name for the health campaign in Australia exhorting people to "slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, and slap on a hat" when we go out into the sun in order to prevent skin damage.

Good luck with the delivery of your boat in June!

Regards Eddie

My daughter Catherine thinks the bimini works fine and also that the Hanse sails so well she can do it with her eyes closed even in 18knots.

...and how much fun am I having? Smile

Hi Borge,
If you want to play around with different fonts, I suggest you go to www.dafont.com and have a look. You can enter the name you have chosen and then see it displayed in hundreds of different formats. Nearly all of these fonts are free to download and by putting them into your Windows fonts folder, you can then use them in "word" and other Microsoft applications.
Cheers,
John

Thank you, everybody, for your good hints on fonts!
Also, I must admit I realy envy you "down under" having summer conditions for sailing. But, in a few months it's our turn again to raise sail and head for new horizons...

God jul!

Greetings All

I came across this very interesting and surprising piece whilst going through the forum.

Eddie, I can say that she is still beautiful and has not changed.
She now lies in Brisbane, Queensland
We purchased her in Dec 2023

Having been born in South Africa, the name still does have much significance as well.
Thanks

Lloyd

Hi from owner/skipper of Hula (400e) in Sydney.

I notice there are mounting sockets for 2x swim ladders on the stern. Is something else mounted on them too?

Cheers

Hiya DJ

The attached photo indicates what I had found when I purchased the HM in Dec 2023.

I have not made any changes other than to nominate and declare that the starboard aft cabin to be the 'man cave'.

But seeing lots of potential for other changes based upon the items within this forum. (early days for me in this water/ sailing life, so lots of learnings.....looking to circumnavigate Aus in two years time.... upon retirement @ 60 Smile)
- Had a face to face chat with John Payne on various items (very interesting guy... Edition 4 of his book out soon, see Amazon (Marine Electrical and Electronics Bible)

No, the grill is there but to the left... see the first photo.

I suspect used for fishing as a bait tray holder.

If anyone else has another opinion, it is welcome.

Thanks

Odds on it is something to do with fishing. Bait board, or fish board seems likely.
