This Easter my partner and I continued our journey south. Having spent a year and a half (on and off) in French waters, we decided to sail across the biscay to the western corner of Spain. Great selling for 24 hours, then the wind died and we had to motor for another 24. We saw lots of dolpins, a few commercial ships but no sailboats. But all in all a great journey.

Hi,
This is an interesting topic for me as I am considering the same sort of passage later this year from UK waters. What Hanse is your boat and where did you sail/motor between on your 2 x 24 hour periods?
BTW, good luck with your preparation and trip.

Thanks John, Robh here is a some more information for you; We sailed from the Bordeaux area down to La Coruna which was about 360 nm. Average speed about 7 knots with about 8 knots the first 24 hours and 6 knots going for motor the last 24 hours. 6 knots is a very comfortable cruising speed with low noise level from the engine. Our boat is a Hanse 545 which we are quite pleased with. She sails well also in a bit of wind and waves.

Cape Finisterre - moving south

Hi guys
Just to let you know we continued our meandring south, this time sailing fram Spain and south to Portugal. No wind so motor all the way.
On concern was fuel consumption. We used 10 liter pr. hour at 2000 rpm and 7 knots. The boat has not been hauled for two years so I guess I have a job to do...

Although the boat has a size, there is always a bigger one
This from our new "home port"

Thanks for the further feedback, especially on the speeds and times as that will help me planning my trip.
You have a bigger boat than me yet you say the cruising speed is around 6 knots, which is about the same as I usually sail or motor at, so i am confused on this aspect.
Great pictures

Hi Rob,
The cruising speed with the boat using the engine is about 8 knots at 2300 rpm. On this latest leg of the journey, I choose 7 knots to fit with departing/arrival time – but the fuel consumption was way to high. Now, sailing is another issue, but with no wind the alternative was rowing

I understand your comments here only to well as a couple of weeks ago my engine overheated as a result of something blocking the water intake on the saildrive. With no wind and being in the Solent just off Cowes I had to anchor quickly and resolve the problem, or the alternative as you suggest would have been rowing. I jury rigged the engine feed from the galley intake to get me home but have not been able to clear the blockage. Food for thought on your extended voyage, as the galley pipe to the engine water pump just about reach end to end and gaffer tape seals the joint?

Hi you all,
On our meandering south, we are contemplating leaving the boat for this upcoming winter in Spain. Do you guys have any advice for to a good “home” between Gilbraltar and Alicant?

Hi,
I've just returned from the area between Alicante and La Manga and have been looking for a marina in that area to where I can sail either later this year or early next and leave BH there for a year or two. There are a couple of Marinas that look good dependent on what you want from them and the size of your boat. Club Nautico Dehesa De Campoamor looks very good and would be my choice but currently they are unable to get me in as I draw 1.9M. The entrance is only around 1.6M but being dredged, as we speak to around 2M and the max length is 12M, so dependent on your size maybe worth a call. The main marina in Torrevieja looks good with easy access and offered me a mooring whilst I was there at a very good yearly rate and it is right in the town centre. The other option that looked good but I was unable to discuss any offering as they were closed on the Sunday I arrived is Santa Polo. This is a very big Port and appeared to have quite a few empty berths, it is also in the centre of town and all are relatively close to either Alicante or Mucia airport.
I Hope this helps and good luck with sorting something out.

Hi all,
I thought I would update you on the last endeavors with our sailing south. We ended up spending the winter in La Linea, just across the border from Gibraltar.
On the way down here, we had lots of technical issues; water in the diesel resulting in broken diesel pump, injectors etc., then we had fishing nets in the bow propeller and finally a damaged main sail. Except that, we had many good experiences
Now we are looking forward to a new season but before that we had her lifted three years since, and done all the underwater maintenance (changing all the through hulls, zinc, antifouling etc.) and polish the hull.
Cheers

I will be making this trip mid-June. We plan to stay off shore from Guernsey to Northern Spain. It will be new territory for me, so if anyone has recommendations on ports of call to fuel up and re-supply please let me know.

Hi Dave
We had a few criteria when we choose our stop over point; max 24 hour sail between each harbor, close to an airport with good connections, repair and service facilities, preferably a city with good sights to see.
We landed in La Coruna after crossing the bay of Biscayne, then Porto, Lisbon, Sines, Lagos, Cádiz, La Linea. In hindsight, we would have spent more time in Lisbon and on the Algarve coast and perhaps omitted Sines and Cádiz. Others that we talked to recommended the fjords in Northern Spain, but coming from a fjord country we past this by.
Cheers
