Hello everyone...
Could you please help select the right secondary winches for genoa/gennaker...seems like the 40 is just about enough - even a smaller one would probably do, but I'd love to install the biggest possible to make my life easier....is it possible to install the 46 or something??? Also according to selection guides, the halyard blocks should be at least 72 mm (Lewmar Syncro 72) but I've got the smaller 60s installed instead...did you guys change these to bigger ones or you think the 60s will last for some time??? |

I have substituted the Lewmar Syncro 72 halyard mastbase blocks with Harken 3042 mastbase teardrop block 57mm. The quality of the Lewmar blocks is not something to write home about. I also know that some have changed to Garhauer stainless steel blocks. Have a look at www.garhauermarine.com

To be honest I was quite surprised to hear that Lewmar blocks are poor quality made....What about the winches??? Maybe I should choose the harken winches instead???
As for Garhauer - one of my good friends on Beneteau First 26 have changed most of his blocks for Garhauer stainless steel ones....Indeed they look solid enough...unfortunately there's no Garhauer dealer in Russia and the prices after shipment and customs become higher that Lewmar's and Harken's....Anyways...if people say "go for Garhauer" I'll go for it.... |

I am very satisfied with the Harken blocks. These are the same blocks as Hanse include in their performance package for the 320 (don't know if Hanse offer this anymore).
Have not experienced any problems with the Lewmar winches. Harken is in my view a superiour product compared to Lewmar which of course is reflected in the price difference.

Thanks a lot for your input people...I guess I'll go for Lewmar winches and Garhauer blocks...Harken is just too expensive for my relatively cheap boat...
Gran Onada...could you please tell me what particular blocks from Garhauer's catalogue you did choose for different tasks and ropes??? Maybe you have photos of your deck arrangement??? Many thanks in advance... |

We have lewmar 40 more than adequate. Just noticed thet out lewmar block for main halyard has collapsed. I think I'll go for one of the alternative makes as this block take a lot of wear

Thanks for the input Gordon...I'll go for the 40s....
Seems like Raptor and Gran Onada were right selecting blocks of other brands...Lewmar blocks don't look solid enough...especially for the hallyard lifting work (what adds salt to injury Hanse installed the Syncro 60 blocks all around the mast base on my boat - these are good for a boat 24 feet long) I will definitely replace all these... Thanks for your help people... By the way...after carefully examining the ropes and halyards on my boat I concluded that probably 50% of them need to be replaced....any recomendations are appreciated..... |

I have changed all the halyards and the genoa sheet with dyneema rope. Spectra will also do the trick as will any low stretch rope. |
