Excellent technology and product. But doesn't say the max range. Is it possible that this is the restriction. For a sailing boat most of the times 4nm is enough, but there are situations in which 8 or even 16nm are desirable. For example when you have to cross a wide traffic separation zone, where some ships travel with 20+ knots. If you need 30min to cross you must look 12nm away

The new broadband radar is revolutionary. Massively lower power, far better resolution, and more modern electronics. If it is as good as hyped my guess is that "old" style radar will disappear and be replaced by this.
It also doesn't look like there are any significantly more expensive components in the new system (possibly even less cost?). Therefore the high price is likely to be just creaming the market whilst it is still new. If you can wait a few years the prices will very likely fall. Wonder if anyone outside the Navico group will pick it up?

@ Peter Russel
I just made this foto of a 370 2 weeks ago in our harbour. It is the scanstrut pole.
![]() If you want to use the one from scanstrut which is mounted on the backstay (very nice solution): I read somewhere (sorry do not more know where) that it might be a problem with it on backstay which is not ending in the middle of the transom. The 370 has a splitted backstay, so you might get a little misangled mounting. The radar must be able to correct this misangle. Thats what i read. Edited by Peter-Blake - 22 January 2009 at 08:14 |

I placed my Raymarine radar on a scanstrut pole at the stern just in front of the pushpit - starboard side (on my 312) because I read that the SAR helicopters (around the UK) preferred to land their winchmen on the port side. When standing in the cockpit sole or on the cockpit seats the radar beam is well clear of all heads and bodies. The weight is low down unlike a mast mount, it is easy to get to for checking and maintenance and I have yet to find a situation where there is a blind spot on the radar because of the inherent way a yacht is constantly moving around. |

Peter
Many thanks for the photo. That was about where I was thinking of placing it.
The reason why SAR helicopters like to come in on the port side is that the pilot is on their starboard side and thus can see the boat clearly. I think that mounting inside the starboard pushpit rail may not be possible on the 370 due to the backstay tensioner being there, but it is worth checking out.
Weather allowing I'll give it a go this weekend and let you know my thoughts.

I have a Simrad RB714 on a Scanstrut (Starboard stern)I am very satysfied. It is also very simple to dismount, just let the mast go down on deck inkl antenna and cables.

@Hutschlange
Do you have the one posted on my foto?
Or do you have the one which is connected to the backstay? If you have this one plz show some fotos of the mounting.
