Tropical storm Ida dumped maybe 6" of rain in an hour or so in Stamford CT a few days ago.

I had about 25 gallons of water in my bilge. Added some bilge cleaner, went for a sail, and spent an hour pumping it out from the subframe. All clean and fresh now.

The interior space of the boat above the floorboards appeared bone dry. Engine pan was dry.  I suspect the companionway scupper couldn't handle the crazy downpour, but I'm wondering how the water worked it's way in. Any hypotheses? I have to assume a large wave might have the same effect.

Her bilge is generally dry, even after heavy rain, so this was a surprise.

Donít know, but Iíd be interested to hear ideas. I suppose you could simulate it by closing that scupper drain thu hull, filling with a hose, and seeing where the water goes.

I am in Stamford too and Albion was dry but I had the same issue when she was in Florida during heavy storms. As you suspect in my case the scuppers were not able to keep up and water would get under the hatch. Similarly I never figured out the path to the bilge.

I do have a suggested fix though. I found that putting a strip of butyl tape around the base of the hatch garage cover to be effective. Since I installed it I have had no more water coming in since it seals the deck scupper from the hatch drainage channel.
