The Belgian Customs point of view is simple and very bureaucratic : Every yachts sailing in "their" waters can only carry full duty paid diesel (= road diesel).  If you can't prove that you paid full duty on your (red) diesel, you will be fined.
As soon as you carry any small part of red diesel in your ship's tank you're are supposed not to have paid full duty.
It is clearly a breach of UN Maritime rules and EU treaties but until now it is the Belgian Custom offices point of view.  If you want to fight this point of view you can before Belgian courts and then EU Court... But it is a long way for un individual citizen for just 750 EUR...

You really empty your tank every winter?
I never did this so far.

Hi Henrik,

It all depends on what type of "official" you meet.  Most are quite nice and sensible, but you know that some enjoy making life difficult for everyone they meet.  So on the principal of hoping for the best and preparing for the worst I carry:

My UK ships' certificate of registration (I sure that Swedish boats have to be registered too).
Certificate of insurance.
Copy of my Hanse invoice to prove that purchase tax has been paid.
Crew passports.
VHF Radio licence with radar endorsement
VHF certificate (I happen to have an MF certificate too)
International Helmsmans' Certificate with the CEVNI (inland waterways) endorsement  (my RYA Offshore Skipper certificate does not quite cut it)

As the UK opted out of the Schengen Agreement I desposit a Schengen crewlist when I arrive in the Netherlands or Belgium.  You would not have to do this as Sweden is in Schengen.

Regards

Ian

@Peter Blake
I emptey it every winter since I hade a bacterie in my tank a few years ago.
( bad diesel I bought in Boulogne Sur mer )

so |I will start with a clean tank every year.
The heeater always uses the last drops of the "old" diesel , so no problem

Hi.
We donīt need to register our boats in sweden. The only paper Iīve got is the invoice from my dealer and insurance. VHF certificate do I have but not in the boat.

Thanks for the great answer.
