You do not have to register a boat in the UK, nor do you have to have a licence to sail.
However all customs officers like to see certificates and oficial looking papers, the further south you go in europe the more the more you have to show, Portugal and Spain like you to book in and out of many of ther ports. On the Red fuel I empty my tanks every winter burn the excess off in our oil boiler, then fill up with road fuel, as it is cheaper than the marina, also marina fuel has a low turn over and can be good for bugs. I do sometimes buy red and then declare 10% for propulsion the rest is heating and battery charging; which is the truth on the sailing I do, there is no set amount, most UK marinas go 40/60 and get confused if you want to do different. Hi,
Since you are talking about customs etc, how is the situation with VATax. I am especially interested about Italy and France since I plan to pass there some time this summer. In Greece most sailing boats are VAT free, if you can prove that you charter them 60 days per year (which I do). I also heard that France does not like this and VAT not paid boats are confiscated. Did you hear such a law? I have legal international papers including boat registration, inspection certificate by the Lloyds register of shipping, radio station license, environmental license for the bilges, mouse and insect inspection certificate... .In Greece anything over 12 meters is considered a ship!!! |

Henrik - is there no registration scheme for Finland? In Britain nobody has to register their boat, but if you intend travelling to other countries, you are advised to, presumably because it proves your Britished flag status. I have always been asked for my Registration Document in France.
Ian - do you need a radar endorsement on your VHF ships licence and on your VHF operators licence? Charles |

Hi Charles,
When you fit radar its just a case of updating the radio licence to include radar, or if you are commissioning a new boat then include it with any emitting apparatus. Unlike a VHF radio you do not need a licence to operate a radar. This will sound very nerdish, but although one does not need to register a boat if it stays in UK waters it does have to be registered if it goes foreign. Our Small Ships Register was created after the French suddenly started fining unregistered UK boats. The French have a law that requires foreign flagged boats to comply with it own national maritime regulations (not unreasonable). As it would have been virtually impossible for most UK yacht owners go down the full registration route the SSR was devised. Regards Ian |

I think you need a certificate when you sail abroad from Sweden that can be obtained from Swedish Cruising Association (Svenska Kryssarklubben). Follow the link to find the application.
I have one aboard but it has expired. Please don't tell your customs in case you know I am visiting you country. ;-) Johan

Oh dear - I guess we have an inter European "situation" here
![]() ![]() In my opinion there is no question that the so-called "flag state principle" applies here. This means that the Belgian authorities seem to be way out of line. As for registering the boat, that is not required in Denmark either and no other EU nation can require Danish boats to be registered before entering their waters. We do have the possibility of getting a so-called international certificate very similar to the Swedish one referred to by Johan. As I understand it, this has no legal status, but is rather designed to help sailors out with any bureaucratic "red tape" when entering foreign harbours. By the way, I had my tank filled up with what looked very much like red diesel in Belgium in 2009, but apparently rules have changed. We will maybe have to wait until the Belgian authorities are corrected in court Meanwhile, you can probably safely enter Danish waters. Here the authorities are mostly not even interested in whatever beverages you carry on board.![]() Ole, |

The next visit to ostend will be No 56
I have had fun with Belgian customs & police The first having been arrested once ( had a machine gun shoved in front of my face - the lot) & the second having been threatened with a 2000 euro fine for not having my name on the stern of my boat (only on the bow) & that was after voluntarily spending an hour being filmed by TV crew on the pontoon being inspected by customs to demonstrate the cross border campaign being run between the Dutch, Belgians & British to stop drug running (with which I fully agree I might add!!! that's why I got involved in the first place)
I usually spend a fortnight at the same time as the Palufessen as I enjoy the bands & being in the marina it is very close by
So knowing the times I have had with the Belgian customs ( Mostly they are great & one of them, Christiansen for those who knew him, used to look out for me & come on board for a coffee & a chat) I have now begun fitting a seperate reserve tank for white diesel. I have no idea if they will accept this, but if they come aboard I will be able to quickly drain some white diesel off the fuel filter to show them I am using it.
I always go at Whitsun with the family- It has been a ritual for many years. We have discussed not going & my crew immediately offered to cough up their share of the fine as they wanted to go so much.
Once the system is installed correctly I intend to put a few pics on the website as some of you may wish to do a similar system. I normally carry spare fuel in the stern but the new tank will have 25 litres & sit alongside my main tank thus keeping the weight nearer the centre of the boat

How do you drain the tank?
Mine is a 50 litre capacity & that is a lot to drain off.
This is especially as I usually fill up for the winter & add a chemical for the diesel bug
If one wants to remove the lot then I assume you have to remove the cover --with the risk that when you put it back it could leak
