Has anyone already broken their ankles while trying to open the refrigerator when the boat is heeled over to starboard?

No, I havenīt. But I think I know what you mean. It happens from time to time that I forget to secure the the fridge drawers from running out and the come running out with a big bang. It is also challenging when you want to open and release the lock and both drawers come running out
Thank you for bringing this up, it will be interesting to hear if some of you others have experience. Good winds during the summer. Bjarne (SY/ NordWest, #072)

Hi, I am interested in this topic too as I see the current setup as downright dangerous. I drilled a hole through both of the latches on the bottom two draws and then lash them when at sea. The two pins in the top freezer are also very weak so I sometimes run the lashing up to the top draw too.
I am still not happy with it, I can see a really bad event happening if someone opens a draw unaware of the risks. I think I will attach some pad-eyes on either side of the cabinet and fit a strap. It is ugly but I do not see another choice, very open to suggestions! |

Hi
After 2 years with a lot of navigations, no problem with the 2 tips in the top. But, for the 2 lockers of the bottom, they are gone once, with lot a damages! And I do not know how to find parts !

I fixed the issue with the 2 drawers of the refrigerator in my H505. I modified the top drawer, bought some extra pin stops (like the ones keeping the freezer in) and made them hold the top drawer. Then i modified the existing latches to hold just the bottom drawer. See pictures attached. |

This might not be realistic, but can anyone think of a way to mount a damper or maybe gas strut to control the drawers?

I'd be interested in what others have done here as well. I've not lost an ankle yet, but that's because I have been VERY, VERY, careful after the first time the drawer slid out while heeling. On a long offshore passage with 12 or more hours on the same tack it would be interesting. My last boat had a top opening refrigerator/freezer as well as doors in front. Not an option on the Vitrifrigo but now I can appreciate it a bit more. |
