Sorry...this was in reply to Matt1: My 418 is balsa core above the waterline. I’d be very surprised if Hanse have ever built a boat with core below the waterline. It’s generally not recommended

hanse used pvc foam cor for their epoxy models in the past, and thos were also beneath the waterline with this sandwich methode of building.
The balsa core has never been used below the waterline.

If you poke around under bunks and lockers, you can see where the balsa runs out and turns to solid laminate around the waterline You can also get a clue as to the laminate thickness at the bow thruster and saildrive openings (if ever your saildrive gaiter comes adrift like mine did)

I installed a few things on our 385 under the waterline and the hull is massive :). Pure laminate, no balsa or insulation, massive fiberglass.
I did also a few destructive test with the removed parts, they did not break !! I do not tell you how i did seen this looked ridiculous but it convinced me a drifting container will not so easy enter my front cabin :).
Looking to the interior frame, well designed for carrying all the keel weight and forces during sailing, just one point, not designed to have the forces the opposite way like a grounding, then you rip it off. And to stay on the honest page this is not an issue only reserved for Hanse Yachts. i have seen several other brands as well.
Best regards
/C

good shout matt1 of how to check depth of hull layup

on a 2007 370, i am just doing the sail drive gaiter , around that area the depth of hull is very visible !   I measured 32 to 33 mm of hull depth ALL solid laminate

On my old  hand built 80s  boat in which I could see daylight through some parts of the stern layup ! Was not as solid. A result of the non “production boat” methods that cause variable quality.

Hanse do a good layup

Also , On the liner or strong back grid, the frame by the chain plates is massive, it’s as much to support mast as much as the hull

That is a wrong interpretation.
The hull is made out off two sections and there is a big overlapp with laminate on the inside.
And the saildrive fundation hase been laminated to the hull there so there is a lot of laminate there.
The hull itself next to the overlap is about 10 mm.
Mesured it myself wenn i made new true hulls.

I just cut a forward looking sonar in the area where the forward head would be and the hull is just a bit under 10mm of solid glass

Marcel / David what model and year Hanse do you refer to?

Marcel I see your point, so if I Understand you correctly the depth at the sail drive opening is the inner liner / grp strongback grid + hull ?
