Topic: Rudder bottom bearing exposedPosted: 11 February 2025 at 13:27 |

Hey everyone - first time poster. I'm hoping to see if anyone else has run into this with their 371.
We've had the boat for a few years now, and noticed when we hauled out this year that the bottom rudder bearing is exposed. It looks like its dropped out of the tube, which is quite corroded at the bottom. Or at least that's what I think I am seeing, I could be wrong. Does anyone have a similar picture from their boat that shows what it's supposed to look like? I'm trying to figure out if I need to fix this before launch in the spring, or if it can wait until the fall. The boat isn't in a place where I can drop the rudder right now. Any help or opinions would be appreciated!

Tried to find a decent picture from my 2005-built 371. The setup is a bit different, the rudder tube is flush with the hull. I see you have a step in the rudder along the top edge, so Hanse probably updated the design somewhere between 2001 & 2005.
The tube is GRP on our boat, laminated into the hull. My feeling is that the bearing rollers should not be visible, on your picture it looks as if the whole bearing has dropped 5cm. How this can happen, I don't know, but I would get it checked by someone with adequate knowledge... ![]() ![]() Edited by martijnvdh - 11 February 2025 at 14:36 |

Thanks @martijnvdh (nice paint job) & @Captain Cook for the pictures, much appreciated! Yes it looks like I need to drop the rudder, especially since I am now even more confused about how that bearing managed to slide down out of the tube after looking at your pics.
Jefa recommends doing maintenance every 3 years anyways, which I am sure everyone always strictly adheres to. Thanks again for the help

Hi
Sorry the bring the bad news to you. Your boat does not have the newer lower bearings. Your version is the old aluminium house type. What you see it the house coroded so much that it can no longer hold the ring that secures the needle rollers. I know by experience from my old 311 with same issue. Symptom is also that it is difficult or even impossible to push the helm to its limits. The needles will twist and lock the rudder. I replaced the rudder and got a 130mm glasfiber tube installed with the newer lower selfaligning bearings. But my rudder was also bad. Please contact jefa marine and hear how you can replace the lower bearing ( aluminium house / 41000 type?)

Good day,
I was curious to know what your final solution turned out to be. Could you share the type of bearing that was installed in the boat? I expect to face the same challenge this winter. Thanks in advance!
