Paul, per previous discussions, yours is probably a grounding plate, not an sacrificial anode. Peter

Paul

I have the Volvo engine and haven't got a hull anode on High Time.

I haven't specifically checked (yet!) if the rudder post is grounded but I don't think it is. I do know that the keel is grounded and there is a small voltage that I measured some weeks ago between the boat 'earth' and the rudder post. I started a thread about this at the time (see http://www.myhanse.com/rudder-post-voltage_topic8997.html ) but didn't reach any conclusion.

Is your keel grounded? If it is, you will see a green/yellow wire connected to the keel if you lift the flap in the floor nearest the table. If your rudder stock is also earthed then you have 2 dissimilar metals (keel and rudder stock)  immersed in seawater i.e. a battery which will result in electrolytic corrosion.

Xantos wrote something about a Technical Dealer Bulletin that could be if interest

Hi Skipper thanks for the response, seems very strange that the Hanse technical bulletin seriously pre-dates the construction of our boat!! We removed the earth from the the rudder post last weekend, following Hanse's recent confirmation via our agent that this was the correct thing to do. There was some minor corrosion under the earth wire connection, but will have to wait and see how the rudder post looks when we take her out of the water.
Many thanks
Paul

Armin,

Nice to hear from Jefa on this subject, can you please also advise other owners on what you would recommend on other models regarding the bonding of rudder shaft?

I have 2010 Hanse 400 with aluminium Jefa rudder, the shat is bonded along with engine and keel to an anode on the hull. Do you suggest disconnecting the earth wire from the rudder post also? and if so what then is the point of the hull anode as sail drive anode will sacrifice first in every instance?

Does anybody know if Hanse also recommend to remove the cable from the hull anode?
Is this anode on newer boats? (after 2010)
Maybe that`s why my drive was corroded?
