That looks like antifouling paint and not like corrosion to me.
The white stuff above the rudderblade seems to be sika, that what they use between rudderblade and shaft! If it is soft than it is sika, if it is like powder, it could be a problem with corrosion. But i cannot see that on the foto. The round white think looks like a barnacle and not like corrosion to me, nut i can be wrong. If you want to be sure, you should drop the rudder 20cm, and than you check the post again. Maybe i am wrong. |

Vertigo, what is the antifoul you are using on the top of the rudder and around the rudder shaft on the hull, its not clear in the photo, is this copper free? Also to all those Volvo engine and saildrive owners, the isolation between the engine and saildrive is this actually effective? after all you have a wire reinforced hose joining the saildrive to the engine that's a circuit, you also have a hose full of seawater connecting the two that's also circuit. Stavros I think you are forgetting (or maybe don't know) that there is the raw water strainer (plastic) between the saildrive inlet hose and the engine (water pump). There is also an air gap at the top of the strainer - not that I think for a moment that an electric circuit exists along the raw water itself. Maybe that's why I get an infinite resistance reading between engine and saildrive! A more likely route for a circuit is between the gear shift and throttle cables via the Morse control. However, this also appears to be insulated. |

PB, it is some antifouling which certainly should not be there as I understand. Unfortunately the barnacle is really a 'hole' or notch in the shaft, same as the white stuff. Overall it is a reaction of the Aluminum and looks not good. I can't tell when this started, as I just figured this out last NOV.
Stavros, whole hull is painted with Micron Extra, it was done 1st time by Hanse when I received her from the yard and I continued using the same for the next 5 seasons. With my 315 I did all same way and had no issues at all. What strikes me is the reaction from Hanse that they are aware of the problem. There must be something more than just some old Antifouling on the shaft! |

Well - not nice te hear this.
If it is really white corrosion powder, i would lower the Blade, and remove all the paint on the shaft. Than you can see if the shaft has serious problems. |

Hi all. All the talk about rudder post corrosion prompted me to have the yard drop my rudder. I will try to post pictures shortly. My post did have slight surface corrosion. I'm tempted to put it back together, make sure there is no ground cable and just check it again 3 years down the road. Do any forum members have thoughts on this? I kind of remember someone fitting a sleeve to it, and then putting in an oversized bearing, but I can't find that post.

I also did get a recommendation to have a sleeve mounted plus new bearings to " solve" the rudder stock corrosion problem. Would be interested to learn experience on this forum.
