Hi
We broke a rudder stop on our steering doing MOB practice. This caused complete steering failure and required the use of the emergency tiller to get home safely. I have had it repaired but fear it could happen again.
Been told that a more robust rudder stops design is needed. Has anybody designed such a system? and if so could you explain

Hi
The Lewmar steerimg system has a circular plate underneath to limit the rotational movement of the wheel. This circular plate has two rubber end stops to achieve trhis. If this was not present then there would be know way of knowing when the rudder had travelled its maximum amount. The problem I see going into reverse and say the helm accidentally lets the wheel go free then considerable force quickly pulls the rudder to its limit and the end stops are the only way to stop its movement. Idealy the stops support should be made out of steel and be placed under the arm on the rudder post. I hope to try make one up soon. Any inputs would be appreciated.
Stephen.
