UPDATE 14 of May 2013: Please read my last post about experiences and changed approach regarding right battcars for fullbatten travellers.
.
-------------------------------------------
.
Today did I went to Viking Yachting, local yachtshop, and bought 2 battcars from Rutgerson to test on our mast profile I330, Hanse 342 from 2005. I guess the "I" could indicate "Isomat" even though it is marked with Sparcraft Ocean.

Battcar 1526-11 with large wheel fit like a glove, I cold move the battcar 3 mm from port till starboard.
Image when I push the battcar against the mast
Updated: THE BATTCAR ABOVE IS THE ONE I FINALLY CHOOSED

Battcar 1525-11 with standard wheel fit okej, I gold move the battcar 6 mm from port till starboard.
Image when the battcar is hanging on the mast laying on the ground

I could push the battcar with standard wheel against the mast, it did not touch the bottom of the groove on the mast.

When the mainsail moves from side to side I believe that the best fitting of the battcar is preferable (large wheels) or is it?

I attempted to buy Rutgerson cars for my mast section - 342 of same vintage.  The gap or slot width is 4 mm, and the wall thickness 3mm.  I was told there was no suitable car, and ended up fitting a Strongtrack system - which is working well, but fitting the cars would have been easier and probably much less costly.  Can you measure the slot width and wall thickness on your mast track??

Nice pictures - but was it wise to cut the mast in half for our benefit

Hi skipper
Thanks for sharing. That new batcar looks much better. My guess is that it less likely to jam simply because it fits better. The larger wheels seem to do the trick. Maybe not as free running as strong track, but not as expensive.

Hi Ole

the sad thing is that my sail maker did without a question mount the 4 Rutgerson battcar for the fullbattens last spring.
During the vacation did I do a mistake when sailing in big waves and strong wind in Norway, a gybe happend so that one battcar were broken. (My gybe preventer line were used by the dingy....)

Discussed with the vendor and with the sailmaker and I will update this thread when I have agreed on which new stronger battcar model I will use this year.

the 1526-11 should not be used for fullbattens, it's fine for the intermediate.

Big wheels diameter 19,5 mm
Body ref no/Profile 11

http://www.rutgerson.se/UserFiles/1/image/catalogues/RutgersonSH_Lowv5.pdf

?material strength?   1531 or 1536
?application ref: svirvel, web ?    -03 / -05 / -15

To many options:-)

Now have we finally sailed one weekend with a changed battcar configuration

Rutgerson 1536-11-05 strong battcars with big wheels (designed for the force from fullbattens) and Sailmain 35 on the mainsail.

Rutgerson 1526-11 intermediate battcars with big wheels (diameter 19 mm)

Specification from the top and down:
4 x 1526-11                   heights 55 mm
1 x 1536-11-05            heights 65 mm
3 x 1526-11
1 x 1536-11-05
2 x 1526-11
1 x 1536-11-05
2 x 1526-11
1 x 1536-11-05
2 x 1526-11

If I would have order battcars today would I only have requested 4 to the battens and instead of webbing for the intermediate travellers would I go for this solution outlined in the picture below (which is the recommendation Marco got from the same sailmaker brand but in a different city compared with me)

During pre-sale phase did I ask the sailmaker if the existing lazybag can be used and yes was his answer and my big mistake was that I for once did trust his opinion.
Usually do I measure and doublecheck everything.

3 issues were I faced when mounting the mainsail with all the battcars:
  • the lazybag were to low
after the first re-make is there 2-3 dm long hole due to that the zipper is the original
need to remove the lazybag a third time and get it back to the sailmaker
  • the top of the sail is impossible for the crew to reach now, to be solved with some sort of mast entry gap filler or a mast step
  • probably doesn't the manual third reef work as before, not verified yet

Conclusion:

never trust anyone
mount only 4 wheel battcars
replace the webbing travellers with a solution recommended by Seldén

Hi skkiper,

I have a 350 and one of my luffshuttle just broke under a 25 knots sail and I will replace the 4 cars at the battens. We do have the same mast profile (Sparcraft Ocean I330). How are working the 1536-11-05? Are you happy with them?

Regards.

Hi,
I am pleased so far, this is the first season.
Please be aware of that the 1536-11-05 needs changed sail fitting, maybe it is better for you to lock in the Rutgerson catalogue for a STRONG battcar with another fitting to the sail and with the same profile "11-05"

I was in contact with the manufactor due to that the BIG WHEEL can be different between the batches, the first intermediate battcars wheels did have a diameter of 19,5 mm, but the batch of big wheels on the latest battcars got diameter 19,0 mm which according to Rutgerson is within the specification (deviation up to 0,5 mm can happens).

Cheers,
Skipper

Thanks Skipper, I think I need 1536-11-15, but I will check with Rutgerson.
