saildrive or prop makes high screaming sound

   Dear hanse fellowsailors,

Above 1500 rpm I hear a high screaming sound. At full throttle it is gone again. Also when the boat is in te box in the harbor (so no speed) I cannot reproduce this. Only when the boat is picking up speed it starts. Also in salt water the problem seems to be less.

I have consulted my Hanse dealer about it. They say it can do no harm and is probably resonance in the prop or slight cavitation. It should become less with the prop wearing a little, roughing the surface. The explanation seems logical to me, considering the behavior of the sound.

Nevertheless. The sound also remains now it the second season, and is still quit annoying. I have heard of people sanding the prop or even grinding the tips of it. Does any of you have experience in this.

I have the standard fixted 2 blade prop and a Yanmar 19 hp engine.

	Hi I have the same problem on my 315 I have reported this to my dealer, and the ys said that they had a dialogue with Yanmar on this. But this is no 6 monts ago, but nothing heard. Have anyone been able to fix this?

	I've the same "problem" on my 315. With fixed prop and 29hp I hear a scream (not so strong) between 2200 and 2800 rpm. I think too it's a resonance and I'm not so worry, but when it's possible I use my engine a bit under 2200 or, at my cruising rpm, 2850. Ciao

	I hear a lot of boats with that problem. Also when I'm in the harbour inside the boat I can hear the ugly noise of the other boats. A few years ago I had a Bavaria with a Volvo Engine and a fix prop and I had the same noise. The dealer told me, there would be a chance to grind the back-flange and the noise should gone away. Because of many other problems with that boat the didn't do it, but thats another story. As I got my Hanse 341 with a Flex-O-Fold there was no ugly noise. Also on my new 370 there is no ugly noise from the prop (also Flex-O-Fold).

	I had the same problem with my hanse 315. There was installed a 29hp yanmar with a fix prob. Hanse Vertrieb Greifswald was not interessted to solve the problem. At the "Boot Düsseldorf" I talked to Yanmar and described the problem. Yanmar gave me the advise to contact flex o fold because he know the right prop size for a 29 hp yanmar and the Hanse 315. the noise is the result of a too smal prop. For 29 hp Saildrive you need a 3 blade prop (Flex o Fold) 16x12 or a 2 blade prop 16x13. I bought a 3 blade 16x12 and i'm very satisfied, the problem solved and the speed is 1kn higher (2200 rpm) than before. Kind regards Piet

	Hi Nordsee, what is now your cruising speed? Is your new prop a folding one? I'm quite interested in chanching my fix prop but i'm afraid about a lower speed. Now I've got the original 2 blade fix prop and the engine is a 29 hp too. Thank you Ciao

	Hi I bought a 3 blade folding flex o fold (16x12). The third blade isn't important for speed. I have a 29 hp yanmar and my cruising speed is around 5,5 kn (ca. 2200 rpm). Ciao Piet

	Hi Piet, 2200 rpm is, according to my Yanmar assistant, too low. Your cruising rpm may be near to 2800 rpm and your speed probably over 6,3 kts. Don't worry it's not too much! Ciao Riccardo

	Hi. I had a strong screaming sound between approx. 1800 and 2200 rpm on my 370 when I collected it in Greifswald last August. I was told to give it some time and it would disappear. It didn't, at least not during 85 hrs. of engine use last year. I thought it came from the saildrive, and you could also hear it sailing at relatively high speed with the fixed prop. spinning in neutral. This winter I changed the standard prop. for a Kiwiprop and the sound was gone when we put the boat back on the water this spring. I, of course, have no proofe that this was related to the change of propeller, maybe the Norwegian winter did the trick? Edited by Andis - 16 June 2008 at 19:00
