Thanks, Thomas.  With a new rudder being built as well for next season I'll make certain that both the shipwright and the engineer are onboard in person for some pretty intensive sea-trials.  If there's any leakage it'll be their bodies that will go into the hole first.....

you will not sink but water might have creaped in the structure and come out where you don't combine it with the saildrive cutout. Better check...

Hi Aian,

Curious, ‘deep servicing’ after how many hours, preventive or triggered by issue ?

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter - short answer: 'half & half'.

Long answer: The engine is 14 years old with 1400hrs on the clock.  The Yanmar manual states injectors require a service after 1000 hours and this had been neglected (to my shame).  Also, after looking at the various threads on fuel economy, speed versus revs on this site it was obvious mine compared badly.  No discoloured exhaust, just that I needed about 500 revs more than others for the same speed in calm waters.  The injectors are but one of many potential culprits that I'm having checked out, and I preferred to have the injectors removed and sent to a specialist for professional maintenance.  On taking over the vessel nearly 6 years ago the tank was very badly infested with sludge from diesel bug.  Although this was thoroughly cleaned out and I've been almost religious with Marine 16 additive and weekly checks ever since, it’s possible that some microscopic particles may have escaped the filters to affect the nozzles.

As a preventative measure, I'm having everything remotely mentioned in the service book plus everything that the Yanmar main agent recommends as a 'good idea' done over winter before a 5 month cruise to remoter parts of the UK & Ireland next year to hopefully minimise 'surprises'.

All the best

Iain

Yanmars says 5.5L to fill an SD50 from dry. Note the Quicksilver GL5 oil they recommend is not kind to the cone clutch. Personally I use the Yanmar ‘alternative’ recommendation for a GL4 oil. I found Westaway 80w90 GL4 recommended for classic cars with bronze parts works for me. I’m at about 550hrs since the cone clutch was lapped and no sign of the slipping reoccurring. Fingers-crossed!
