I've been very pleased with the Selden in mast furling. I realise that it increases weight aloft - but it does make my (relatively) short handed sailing much easier.

I know that the furling mechanism is not supposed to be lubricated (and hasn't been). However recently the unfurl (out) operation has struggled - it runs slower and slower and can stop altogether momentarily.

I've freed off the mainsheet; the boom is parallel to the deck and 30 degrees to port of the centre line; the outhaul is on the Selden Smart Winch running in tandem with the in mast mandrel.

Am I missing something?

Many thanks

Richard

There is a youtube video from a guy in San Diego (Hanse dealer there) who explains nicely how to take care of that in mast furling mechansim. If you find that video, it may help to diagnose the problem. I so far didn't have any problems with it except one time when I reefed the main and didnt point the boat into the wind. I managed to stuck the main in mast top because of one vertical batten. (That batten broke at the end which I discovered much later)

Many thanks Marsella

I'll try to find the video. And post the link if I do.

Best wishes

I recently had my rigging tuned and the rigger cleaned and lubricated the gears.  He commented that the grease that was originally used in 2019 was the wrong kind.

Hi Coquita

That's very interesting. As far as I was aware the mechanism doesn't require lubrication - which I find a little odd.

Can you say what your rigger lubricated - and with what lubricant?

Many thanks

Richard

The rigger used Super Lube Multi Purpose Synthetic Grease with Syncolon (PTFE).

Thanks Coquita!

Did he apply the grease to the top and bottom bearings?

Best wishes

They applied the grease to the gears in the mast behind the selden winch.  It took them a while to clean out the old grease first.
