Selden single line reefing

   Hi all sailers
Does any of you know how many reefs the Selden single line reefing systems can handle? My Hanse dealer informs me that only reef 1 and 2 is possible. I want to have a third reef, and the dealer says I have to solve this in another way than through the single line system.

	Your dealer is right. In the boom is not enough space for a third reef in the way it is done for the first two reefs. Gregor

	Totally right. Selden's single reefline booms system uses two sliders with blocks. Have a look here : http://seldenmast.com/files/1296213340/595-664-SETF.pdf This design prevents to have more than two single line reef. But you can rig a "classic" third reef system.

	At the goosneck I have a strop that goes through the spinnaker ring on the front of the mast. The ends o either side of the mast & hooks onto spectacles on the sail. the length is made to prevent the sail pulling down on the mass of sail lugs that collect when the sail dropped. At the outboard end I can either use the clew out haul - which is redundant- or in my case i have a line running alongside & the end just stops ready rather like an extra clew outhaul. I have a rope strop with loops each end that goes under the boom & up through the slots in the sail bag, To stop it dropping out I have tied a knot in it so it will not pull back through the sail bag slots I connect one loop to the spare reef line mentioned above so that the loop & the line just lay ready in the bottom of the bag To apply the third reef i drop the boom down so i can reach it from in the cockpit without standing on the seats ( safety) the lazy jacks just about allow this without adjustment I pass the loose end of the strop through the clew of the sail , then through the loop in the other end of the strop then hook it to the reef line. As the reef line is tensioned the strop tensions pulling the clew down & outboard. The sail is now held very securely at the gooseneck & a single line holds the clew. The friction in the strop assists it in staying rigid. If you do not have enough rollers in the boom for the third line then use the clew outhaul but this should have a snap shackle instead of a normal shackle as you do not want to faff with shackles in a gale

	Samuel: If you have a chance, a few pics would be helpful. I think a third reef is required and I would like to do it when my boat is down for fitting a storm-sail inner forestay. Thanks in advance. Dave
