. . . . . and the answer I'm looking for is not "buy a gennaker, Code 0 or other 'big' headsail". I just want to get better service from the standard jib.

I have heard of two alternative methods to get the standard jib to set better downwind.

The first is to use a whisker pole to support the clew.

The second is to use a 4:1 tackle from the shroud base to the clew with the tail back to the cockpit.

What are the pros and cons of each method and is there a third alternative (apart from a new sail!).

One game I play is a block off the midship moring cleat , then a sheet through block back to winch off clew.
However you are looking for the Holy Grail and in my experience wind the sail up is the third and best option as there is no speed to be had from it and it will just bang about.

They're different.  Pole is for straight down wind or close to it, so that the jib doesn't collapse regularly.  The line from the shroud base to the clew will pull the clew down and stop the upper part of your leach vibrating at anything other than close hauled, so it improves your sail shape even when on a beam reach or broad reach.  not sure it would be as good as a pole for deep running, i recon the combination of both will be best, the pole to hold out the clew and the line to control the pole height and hence the leach tension.  I will be fitting both when using the self tacker.

Anybody  got any better info or experience?

A (spinnaker) pole works really well for me when running wing on wing downhill.

Roger, I (my dealer!) put outboard jib tracks on the rail. I believe this will work quite well for running a larger jib -106 or getting the ST to set properly off the wind.   The down side is you need an extra set of sheets! We will go on our innaugural cruise this weekend and I will send some pics snd let you know how it goes!

Hi

I'll be interested to know how this works. Was it a dealer option or a special that you requested? Was it expensive?

From the comments above it looks like both the whisker pole and the tackle (or barber hauler) will give some improvement with 'roll it away' as the third option!

Enjoy your inaugural trip - it's a great boat to sail. I find I don't use the autopilot as much with this boat as I did with my previous as it's such a delight to helm!

Think it was about $500, but it would be easy to do yourself. Another easier abd cheaper option would be to mount a pad eye up on the rail to attach a block to. The 445 comes with that pad eye already installed.

Hi   I agree with Mark .We have raced our 531 ,2 up for over 9 years and tried everything .The best combo is a padeye on the toerail with a block dedicated , plus a correct length pole for the jib..You can try not letting the main right off ,or if you have let it off, bring it on quite a bit. We find this spills wind into the jib and keeps it full. Or sail the angles downwind like the quick modern racers.   Cheers   John

Hi High Time, A spinnaker or whisker pole with outboard sheeting with toppinglift and down haul will give you full control on the shape of your sail downwind. I use this system with both self tacker and genoa and also for the tack on the genaker when deep reaching. Cheers
