My main halyard is slipping in the clutch. I have replaced the clutch cam and the line is fresh. I'm not sure how to solve this. Going to the cam for the next smaller line size doesn't seem like it would work I don't think the clutch would close.. I don't think the sheaves would work with a larger diameter line. I'm curious how others have addressed the issue.

Hi, we had the same issue when we got Night Train, the dealer replaced the main halyard with a 14mm one, this worked fine but was far too big for the job. We then replaced the 10-14 mm cam for a smaller one and put the old halyard back in, which works fine although little bit harder to lift the cam when you drop the sail. For the jib we replaced the cam too and put in a smaller diameter dyneema halyard which seems the best option. We will do the same with the main halyard once it needs replacing.
There have been quite a few posts about this and others have sleeved the halyard where it goes through the cam.

I had the slipping halyard problem on my previous boat a 445.
I now have a smaller 315 and had two of the Ronstan Constrictor halyard clutches installed. Halyard slipping is now a thing of the past!! Here is a link: https://www.ronstan.us/marine5/constrictor.asp |

I have 8mm dynema halyards & have just threaded a number ( about 12) of lengths of thick whipping twine down between the core & the outer sheath of the rope to make it much thicker. Seems to have worked so far

This is a common problem with multiple posts. I also had my dealer replace the cams for the main and jib for the smaller 6-10 mm cams. Both these halyards are dyneema 10mm.
I had to fit the new cams myself which wasn't too big a job. Delighted with the result. Main in particular has a much better shape now I can tighten the luff. I am finding that my 12mm braid on braid jib sheet has lots of friction and can be difficult to furl and unfurl. I am planning to replace this with a 10mm dyneema line. Does anyone have experience of this? Update 2019: I changed my jib sheet last season and now use 10mm dyneema with good results. Jib is much easier to furl. I would love to replace all the other 12mm lines with 10mm dyneema, espatcially the main sheet, but at the moment cost is too high for me to justify this. I am interested in the other solututions mentioned later in this thread, especially the RP25 product and the constrictor. I actually came across a bank of constrictors on a hight performance catamaran last year - never seen them before.

We suffered same problem with main, I think everyone that has the performance pack added with FCL sails and dyneema halyard does. Best solution is to change the cams to 10mm, I upgraded to ceramic and works perfectly, I intend to do the same for the Jib this winter.

Same problem on the main halyard. We upgraded to ceramic cams, which was much better but it still slipped when we put in the first reef. After a "cutting the halyard in half by mistake" issue, we upgraded to a decent dyneema rope (rather than cruising dyneema), and that seems to have fixed it.

I have the same slipping halyard problem.
I have read a lot about the constrictor. Can you show me a picture of how you installed them on your boat? I have a 5 clutch unit on each side and there seems o be no space for them.

I have two constrictors mounted outside the four conventional rope clutches. Not very clear but the best I have. I will try and get sm better pics when next on board.

Whatever you do refrain from buying cheap cruising dynema. The rope in the picture has a declared SWL of 5200 Kgs However, with a load estimated at circa 1000kgs the end of the line was on a cleat when a crew went to release it.Just as he started the outer covering parted & the core slid out of the outer part. Even though the outer part remained on the cleat. We were very close to having a serious accident ![]() |
