A multimeter is a must in the toolbox. Test if the bulb/diode is OK by using the continuity tester (-I<-). It will show the number 1, and when the probes touch each other you will hear a signal sound and the number will change to something like 212. If you disconnect the + and - wires, and touch the probes at the wire-ends, you will get a "1" if no current is passing the bulb. If the bulb is LED, try the +/- probe on both wires. LED stands for "Light Emitting Diode", and a diode is a gizmo, that only permits the current to travel in one direction. On some new diodes, you can connect the +/- terminals any way you like, but as a rule, the wires have to be mounted correctly. To sum it up: If a LED shows no light, try to reverse the polarity. A reverse of polarity can happen when the mast-light is reassembled.
