Hanse 400 2011 : We are about to embark on reducing the clutch size on the main halyard down to 6-10mm as discussed above. When we started dismantling (5 clutches) in situ, there were 2 large Philips head screws/bolts holding the first unit to the deck. They turned easily. All the videos show a complete unit in a workshop - not on the boat.

My question is - can we unscrew these bolts without the nuts falling off below deck - or is the nut fixed in place? We don't want to undo the top bulkhead in the stern cabin.

You most likely have an aluminum backing plate with tapped holes bedded in the fibreglass, though I can’t say for sure if that was the case for 2011 production year.   In my case I did remove the ceiling panel in the aft cabin because I also installed a horn cleat to back up the clutch and prevent any slipping under load that will abrade the line.  I didn’t downsize the clutch but replaced aluminum cam and base with ceramic parts - these hold my 10mm warpspeed line fine under the initial tension and the horn cleat ensures the halyard doesn’t move with wind loading.
