Hi.   I have a 2002 371 Hanse.  The boat is in the Canaries.  Due to Covid I was away from the boat for 6 months.  On returning I noticed that the wheel felt quite stiff to turn.  I can turn it but I feels stiff.   If I spin the wheel it will spin but then stops before reaching end stop.  I had a Raymarine serial motor auto helm fitted 6 months ago so I detached that and the rod between wheel and rudder.   The wheel moved freely. The issue is with my rudder.  Does the rudder have bearing or some other mechanism to help it move freely in its housing or is it just grease.   Any suggestions on how I could free up the rudder without having to drop the rudder in a boat yard would be great. I turn the wheel regularly as I am living on board for the moment.  Thanks in advance for any advice.  Peter

Hi Peter, sounds if the lower bearing needs some fresh water. You have to move the gaiter and rinse with fresh water. Maybe the bearing is stiff due to residue of salt.

Good luck 👍

Thanks for the reply.  So are you saying that I could pore fresh water into the rudder casing while in the water?   As I say I will try anything to avoid dropping the rudder onto the hard.  Again thanks.   Peter

Hi just go below the deck. There you see the rudderpost. Around this rudderpost is a rubber (looks like neopreen grey rubber) fitted. You may take this rubber off. There will be no
water into your boat 😉. Take a waterhose and just let some fresh water go on and thrue the lower bearing. I hope you understand what I mean. Maybe it helps if someone is turning the wheel slowly when rinsing the bearing. No grease or oil may be used in these bearings.

If you look at Jefa rudder online and do a search for ‘gaiter’ it will make some sence 👍

hi.  I tried the water down the rudder housing but no improvement.   There is always water in the rudder housing.   I took a video of the bearing movement.   If you look carefully the complete bearing moves with the rudder shaft.  Not sure if that is supposed to happen.  Could the bearing have seized up.   I have contacted Jefa and am awaiting a response.  Thanks Peter

Than I suppose that the lower bearing needs to be replaced. Wait for the advise of Jefa. Good luck 👍

it has been confirmed that my bottom bearing has come loose from the rudder housing Hanse the stiffness and squeaking.  I have to drop rudder and replace bottom bear or maybe just re-epoxy it back in place.  Again thanks for your help.   Peter
