Hi, having galvanic Problems with my Aluminium rudder axcis on our H 375 I would like to know something about the strengh of this rudder axcis. Can someone tell me how thick the walls on that pipe is? Is there any experience in the Group dealing with this Subjekt?

It is a masive alu .

The rudder in total weights about 52 kg and the masive alu stock itself weights about 36 kg.

This forum has a lot of comment about this. When I bought my 2008-model boat two years ago I noticed a fair amount of pitting.  The surveyor said it was nothing to worry about and the main UK Hanse dealer echoed this, showing me a 'spare' rudder post to show how massive a structure it is.  Apparently its only the visible 2cm part of the stock that corrodes.

However, I didn't agree that it was nothing to worry about, especially as other issues with corrosion became evident later.  Although the rudder post is supposed to be electrically isolated, the experience in this forum suggests that this may be hard to achieve in practice.  Last year I fitted a hull anode and bonded both the rudder post and the saildrive leg to this as I'd also had problems with the leg's anode being eaten rapidly.  This year there's been no further (visible) pitting on the rudder post and the SD leg's anode has lasted so much better, while the hull anode has depleted nicely showing that its doing its job properly.  

The rudder post is indeed massive and I'm not concerned about its integrity. However, I'll be keeping a very close watch on the post, saildrive and anodes.

Hello, there are a lot of opinions on this but galvanic corrosion is an issue even on GRP boats. I installed a separate anode only connected to the rudder, one only connected to the saildrive and another only for the keel. Yes I made a few holes but the result great, no oxidation, no rust, nothing any more. Only partly eaten anodes what is fine.

Jefa says that we should paint the exposed part with epoxy. I think that will help a little.

I use the same spray paint I use on the saildrive https://international-yachtpaint.com/en/gb/boat-paint-products/antifouling/trilux-prop-o-drev .It appears to work well and is easy to apply.

prop speed for both prop itself and aluminium leg is an excellent option, if applied properly it lasts a long time and provides a coated protection to the material its applied to.

The stock can be fixed with a sleeve and a bigger bearing. This will cost €.420,- +VAT

This will stop the problem, but the loss of strength will not come back.

Hi Scotti, yes there is an outcome in process. We recieved following answer from Jefa. (see below).
We have commissioned a boat builder to install the Jefa sleeve. This is currently in the process. For us first a little bit of a breather, because not the whole rudder (costs about 4000 €) must be exchanged.

The  new rudder stock bearing (for rudder with sleeve) fits into the existing housing, in other words, is the existing housing as well 130 mm diameter?
