Hi Guys

I am in Estepona and the steering chain on my Hanse 458 has broken. Do you know if there are any alternatives to the Jefa CW800 replacement kit, since at the moment nobody is replying to my emails? Or has anyone found another way to solve this problem?

Thanks

Gemini LLM says:
"Sourcing the Chain and Master Links:
    • Industrial Suppliers: Your best bet is to find an industrial chain supplier, possibly in or near Estepona or a major city in Spain. You'll need to look for suppliers that carry stainless steel roller chain with the ANSI B29.1 (ISO606A) 5/8" pitch specification.

    • Quality is Key: The quality of the chain is paramount. Some Hanse owners have reported issues with corrosion on the original chains, with some suggesting that the supplier may have changed over time. Look for a reputable brand like Tsubaki. While it may be more expensive, it's a critical safety component.

    • Master Links: You will also need to source the appropriate master links to join the chain. Jefa sells a master link for their 5/8" chain (part number CHLNK), so an equivalent from the new supplier would be necessary.

  • Sourcing the Wire Cable and Terminals:

    • The Jefa system uses a 7 x 19 steering cable, which is a type of wire rope.

    • Rigging Shops: A local rigging shop or a well-equipped boatyard in Estepona is the ideal place to source the steering cable and have the necessary terminals swaged on. They will have the expertise to cut the cable to the correct length and create the closed eyebolt with a thimble eye and bulldog grips that connect to the quadrant."

Steering chain/cable failure happens more often than it should on 445/455/458.

Can I ask what the maintenance history of your Jefa system is as yours is a very young boat to have this problem? Do you know if the annual maintenance has been carried out since new for instance?

Certainly on my boat, Hanse had never applied any grease to the chain/cables, there was no evidence of grease at all.

    Thanks.
