Hello, I'm working to order a new main for our 545 and want a third reef. The problem is how to organize the 2 extra reef lines. Now I have 2 reefs with a 2 lines reef system on the Selden mast and have no extra spare mastfood blocks and no place in the deck linetunnel, organizers and clamps to run the 2 extra lines back to the cockpit. The only thing I can do is take away the Spi-halyard and toppinglift but I dont like this. On the Selden boom(B290 without a car inside) I have one extra set sheaves left, but on the gooseneck it is not possible to run the reeflines upwards only downwards. I try to work out a one line system but this failed because in the front of the boom I have to lead the back reeflines down to a block on the mastfoot, go up to a block on the reefwebbing of the luff reefpoint and back to a mastfoodblock to run back to the cockpit. This make to much friction and it is impossible to get the leech of the reefed sail complete down to the boom without damage the reefwebbing or the sail on the luff side.(thats why Selden use a car inside there smaller booms to distribute the forces better ?) And at least I dont wont to go to the mast in a strong gale to fix the reefs on the reef eyes, by the way it is impossible to get the sail down by hand our to reach the third reef (MDS battencars) without Climbing on the mast. Suggestions are welcome . Edited by Wild - 29 March 2015 at 11:48 |

I have no good suggestions, but as I will replace main next year and also want third reef, I will monitor discussion :) So far, the only viable solution is to go clasic reefing with one lech line and luff attach point :( |

You are obviously on a much bigger boat than I am, so I am not sure the comments will help. On mine I have put block and becket pulleys on the first and third line pulley by the base of the mast on the same swivel point . The deck organisers can be doubled up in height for extra ropes. all you need is extra long screws, though on my boat there is actually a long enough deck reinforcement to add more deck organisers. Adding more jammers should not be a problem as there is normally enough deck reinforcement for you to add another jammer. Failing that you will just have to use the same jammer for the first and third reefs.
I have to accept what I have got , but I do not see a real problem with having a separate luff and leech reefing line, it just means you have to be organsised when reefing if you are short handed.
