I definitely had to adjust. Furthermore, I had to adjust it even before it failed. If the door is not well tight, then it slams when you have big waves. If it's too tight, then you have unnecessary stress on the door...but  I was less systematic than Leon. I simply observe from the noise /deformation of the system inside when the door starts closing, and and I set the switch on that position. You can perceive from the inside when the door starts closing because the actuator system starts deforming and the stepper motor noise changes ...

Yes, with some experience, the limit switches can be set to a safe position by simple observation as Piero says. We both learned the hard way! There is also a current limiter on the controller PCB. It has 10 positions which range from minimum to maximum power to the actuator. With trial and error you can set it to the minimum required to open and close the door. This way if anything changes or obstructs the motion, it will stop the actuator before it self destructs, or breaks something else. I believe mine is set to “3”. This will give additional insurance against damage.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your explanations and will work on these adjustments.
It is interesting to note that without regularly adjusting the system, it lasted for 7 years, which for me looks like a miracle!
Thanks and have a great sailing season,
D

As usual i learn from you, León! I had misunderstood this switch was setting the current of the thuster but you're right :it is the actuator!!!

Good morning to all,

My question is, a stern thruster could be installed later on a second hand Hanse. Do you technically advise. Boat is Hanse 460 with factory installed bow thruster only.

Best regards

A stern thruster could be installed but it would not be a small job!  Batteries, charger, wiring, hull opening with matching door, etc., and finally the cost. I have a stern thruster, and I can tell you that I don’t use it much. I find that the propellor combined with the rudder do a better job moving the stern. The thruster has to fight against the surface area of the rudder and simply is not strong enough to move the stern much.

I agree as usual with Leon. furthermore, the stern thruster stays below the bed - with limited cooling. After 30s of thrust or so, the thermal protection kicks in. so, you can't trust it in case of difficulty...

Kemalgunduz,

Anything is possible but I think the cost would be too high. I notice on an option list for the 460 the bow thruster option is $12K but the stern thruster option is $16K. The option list just describes the stern thruster as 12V so maybe a size 140 which costs about $7,500 plus fitting, battery, 12V to 12V charger, double thruster control, cabling and commissioning. I would think the fitting would be in the range of $12- $15K plus hauling out for about 3 weeks. So I would think the total cost would be about around $30K. To do the job there would be a lot of glassing and grinding both inside the hull and outside which would lead to a lot of very fine fiberglass dust inside the boat. For a boat of the 460 size I would think a bow thruster would normally be all you need in combination with use of the engine and rudder.
