Hi Everyone - Happy New Year. I have recently bought a 2010 Hanse 470 which has a Selden Rodkicker fitted. I think this is original equipment. The boat also has a topping lift. Does anyone happen to know whether the vang as supplied comes with a gas cylinder to support the boom? We sailed a few days ago with the 1st reef in, and noticed the aft end of the boom was very low into the cockpit. Is that my fault (a badly adjusted Rodkicker), or a badly cut sail? Many thanks.

You should be able to release the mainsheet, loosen the topping lift, and have the vang carry the boom without anything else involved. If not, then something is more than likely a problem Note that its always possible to crank the mainsheet so tight that it will pull the boom down low despite the vang. Its just fighting the vang while doing that. testing it with all the other lines released should let you know. |

Rick suggests a good test of your vang. You may also consider that when reefing, make sure the vang and main sheet are ureleased. This way the clew will be tight to the boom end. Otherwise the boom will hang low when sheeted in.

There is a gas spring in the Rodkickers that can be replaced. If it is not 'lifting' then that is likely the problem. The springs are available from Selden and some less expensive ones (not Selden) if you look around the web.

the gas springs can fail if you store the vang in the wrong direction during winter.
there are also companies around who can repair / reload gas springs

Dear All V many thanks indeed for the
advice. I will have a go at seeing if the boom has support (other
than the topping lift) this weekend - with the vang loosened. Fingers crossed :) |

The boom with sail is very heavy from new the rodkicker is fitted with a 2.5 knm gas cylinder, however it is slightly to week to lift the boom creating a lot of play, noice and wear in the rodkicker itself, it ought to be replaced with a 5k knm gas cylinder, it is fairly easy to do however need some new rivets in one end.
With the extra strength in the boom the sail is much easier to set correctly and give more performance, the gas cylinder can be found in Seldens catalogue. Regards Niels

well Kellet a rigger can easily fix the rivets when you have replaced the gas cylinder I’m sure, it is definitely worth the hassle
