Depends on what type of sailing you'll mainly be doing and, therefore, how you would use the traveller. Cockpit mounted gives you more control and is typically preferred by racers who will frequently be adjusting the traveller. However, this arrangement will get in the way when cruising and could potentially be dangerous, particularly with children or inexperienced people onboard.
Roof mounted doesn't allow quite the same ease or range of adjustment but unless you're a really dedicated racer, you're not that likely to notice much difference. I have mine on a short track forward of the sprayhood and, although I'm set up for cruising, anything in front is a target and anything behind is a threat. I do still use it a lot and have found the range of movement plenty for my needs; good sail trim can cut hours off a long passage and I wouldn't want to do without one.
