Does any one want a spare Quick TDC 1044 dual joystick control for your bow and stern thruster for free ? We got sick of dealing with lost bow thruster doors etc on our retractable bow thruster and are about to fit a tunnel bow thruster so don't need the dual control. The stern thruster has been less problematic so we retain it and will have a single Quick control for it with a seperate control for the new tunnel bow thruster. Also have two props and the shaft universal that someone may want for free. We are in Sint Maarten, Dutch Caribbean and can freight any of the above at your cost. It seems a shame to throw the stuff away.

Hi Wayne, it sound like you’re in for a project. I agree, there are advantages to a tunnel in that it’s always deployed and won’t tangle with anything in the water and of course not subject to damage. Also, less moving parts. Let me know how the work progresses, and I would be very interested in any parts you have left over. I’m guessing you won’t be installing Quick equipment on the refit.

Leon,

All your if you want the bits. We have gone with a Sleipner (Sidepower) 215mm diameter tunnel, 8.8kw 24V motor with a thrust (apparently) a little higher than the existing retractable bow thruster. Due to haul out on 9 January. The "new" two joy stick controls are fitted (bow Sidepower and stern Quick) which looks OK. All parts are now in SXM and the tradesman are lined up for the 9th Jan. Bit of a big refit this year with new sails, bimini, dodger, sail bag, aft shades, antifouling etc etc.

Hi Wayne,

Mine just had a water leak,  so I would be happy to! I tried to send you a private message but I couldn't send it to you ( I think it's the apostrophe in your name).... I will try again from a PC....

Wayne,
I had a tunnel drive Sidepower 125 on my Hylas 49.    It was a 2007 install, but worked well enough.    Outside of the usual heat shut-off stuff that happens with thrusters (the Sidepower just stopped if you had thrusts that went too long,  you needed to use short bursts),  I had to replace the motor after 5 years.    Fortunately it can be done from inside the boat.

Unlike the QUICK on our 575, the sidepower seemed to be designed well enough to have a sheer pin. The quick breaks every part imaginable if you snag a line or some other submerged crap.  The quick (if I recall correctly) has what every decent snowblower has,  a sheer pin to break sacrificially and save all the other parts rather than losing the entire drive leg (which I've done on the QUICK).

One worry I would have is whether the bow is submerged enough for the tunnel to work.    On our 575,  the bow (even with a loaded sail-locker) seems to ride pretty high.   Wouldn't the tunnel have to be back pretty far on the boat and then less efficient as a result?

Rick,

Sidepower information states the centre of the thruster prop should ( in the size) be 215mm below the water line. We have more than this when the tunnel thruster is in the same position as the retractable. We have a fair amount of stuff in the forward locker including and 320 ltr fuel tank.

Piero,

We often had moisture under the outer cover of the thruster control. Our dealer said it would not get to the electronics because there is a silicone barrier. I asked Quick for a spare silicone barrier and they said they do not supply it as a spare part. If you remove the grey bezel (surround) and remove the control from the console and then undo the screws on the underside of the control and then remove the PCB and get to the silicon barrier and remove it and you can dry out the moisture and it should be OK. You will still get moisture back in the same place over time.

Piero,

Leon (Arcadia) got in before you but when it comes time to send the parts Leon can decide if he wants the control.

Thank you anyway Wayne! Admittedly,  my problem wasn't about moisture: all the sail locker got flooded when a seacock connection detached in bad sea, and the electronics is below the sea level.... the oxidation from a seawater bath is by far beyond recovery... including the electric motor relay,  that I had to change because it got stuck in jolly harbour,  it must have been an interesting spectacle to see the boat rotating 360 in the entrance for ten minutes before somebody could reach the battery switch at the bow, below all the stuff we keep there....

Wayne, any thoughts on how they plan to close that big square hole left by the old thruster. It takes a pounding as I’m sure you well know.
