If I was a betting man, I would have won a fortune betting that you would come back with that question because what I have written appears so wrong, yet it is absolutely correct. Selden reckon that having a free turn so that just the upper part of the jib does a revolution prior to the lower part then following on, ensures that the jib furls nicely and evenly, and they are right, it does.

So are you saying that the foil twists so much that it makes one turn before the bottom
Because one would expect the bottom to turn first as that is the end the torque is applied
You cannot sail with a twist in the foil
What makes the top rotate before the bottom
This is getting harder to comprehend now you have me really perplexed
You are supposed to keep the whiskey on board for visitors. Not knock it all back yourself!!!
Come on --- more info please

Hi,

Very confusing!
On top there is a free rotating swivel which makes sure that there is no "pre twist" in the foil.

Dear Charles you got us confused and I think you are going to serve free drinks to everybody in this forum - unless you explain your point with some pictures.

Yes, "M", I am an aviation guy indeed.
That's from where i stole the idea with the red engraved plastic plate.
The other one are two  logical checklists for departure / arrival. This helps friends to prepare or leave the boat in a correct way.

Hi Fendant,

Good to know! Big smile

What do you have on your checklists for arriving and leaving?

On mine are:

Upon arriving on the boat:
- Opening the gas bottle switch in its locker
- Switching on the service key for electrical power
- Switching on the necessary electrical items (fridge, water pressure pump)
- Switching on the service key for the engine
- Check bilge etc for leakages
- Open the seacocks

Upon going sailing:
- Add tension to the jib halyard
- Add tension to the backstay
- Keep all items necessary in the cockpit (horn, map, binoculars, knife, etc)
- Switch on all sailing electronics and check that they work properly
- Close the hatches
- Ensure engine seacock is opened
- Remove shore power cord before starting engine

Upon leaving the boat:
- Closing the gas bottle switch in its locker
- Switching off all electrical switches
- Switching off the service key for electrical power
- Switching off the service key for the engine
- Check bilge etc for leakages
- Lock the hatches
- Close the seacocks
- Release tension on jib halyard
- Release tension on backstay
- Fix boom in the middle

Machiel.

There are two swivels, one top swivel and one bottom swivel. The bottom has a free rotation of one revolution. Before attaching the clew to the bottom swivel, the bottom swivel is turned one complete revolution anticlockwise and it then hits a stop. You then attach the bottom clew. Now the sail is furled also anticlockwise using the furling line. The track therefore goes one complete revolution before engaging the bottom swivel which only then starts to turn. The effect is that the bottom part of the sail trails the top part. When I return to the boat I will quote you the words from the Selden manual.

Plenty of whiskey on board still - hic hic, but be quick.

What is the minimum stock considered sufficient to hoist?  I don't want to fall foul of any existing custom and practice!

I think Dave Holby should come in here
He is, after all, the expert when it comes to cruising the "classic malt" country
But i would expect the answer to be something more to do with "selection" than quantity
